PREFACE.

The object of the present Compilation is to put in a convenient form for Scholars such information as is necessary for the various Competitive Examinations. Ordinary Schoolbooks do not contain all that is now expected in the prevailing system of Examinations, and as it is not possible to supply boys with the many excellent treatises, which have been published on the various subjects of Education, or indeed, to use them thoroughly if they had them, it has appeared advisable to collect in a single volume, such particulars as might be not inaptly called Examination Essentials. .

In consequence of the conflicting authorities in dates, those adopted by the Rev. G. R. Gleig in his School History have been mainly followed.

In the table of dates, pp. 35–37, those events belonging to Church History are printed in italics, and those belonging to the British Constitution in block type.

There are other subjects, such as the History of the Wars, Treaties of Peace, &c., &c., Essentials of Geography, &c., and some Chapters on English Grammar, Analysis, Précis, &c., which the Compiler hopes to include in a second part.

Slough, August, 1861.
