ARTICLE V.

Il est également convenu, que ce qui est stipulé dans l'Article XVIII du Traité ne sera pas censé déroger aux privilèges, réglemens, et usages déjà établis dans les villes ou ports des Etats respectifs des deux Souverains et aussi que par l'Article XXV du dit Traité, on n'entend point qu'il ait rapport à autre chose, sinon aux vaisseaux suspects de porter, en tems de guerre, aux ennemis de l'une ou de l'autre des Hautes Parties Contractantes, des Articles défendus, appelés de contrebande; et le dit Article ne pourra empêcher les visites des officiers des douanes, pour prévenir le commerce illicite dans les Etats respectifs.

ARTICLE V.

It is also agreed that the stipulations in Article XVIII of the Treaty shall not be construed to derogate from the privileges, regulations, and usages already established in the cities or ports of the respective dominions of the two Sovereigns: and further, that Article XXV of the said Treaty shall be construed to relate only to ships suspected of carrying, in time of war, to the enemies of either of the High Contracting Parties, any prohibited article denominated contraband; and the said Article is not to hinder the examinations of the officers of the customs, for the purpose of preventing illicit trade in the respective dominions.

ARTICLE VI.

Leurs Majestés ayant statué par l'Article XLIII du dit Traité, de déterminer la nature et l'étendue des fonctions des Consuls, "et qu'une "Convention à cet objet serait faite "immédiatement après la signature "du présent Traité, et serait cen"sée en faire partie," il est convenu qu'on rédigera cette Convention ultérieure dans l'espace de deux mois, et qu'en attendant, les ConsulsGénéraux, les Consuls, et les ViceConsuls se conformeront aux usages déjà pratiqués relativement au Consulat dans les Etats respectifs des deux Souverains; et qu'ils auront tous les privilèges, droits et immunités que leur qualité suppose, et qui sont donnés aux Consuls-Généraux, Consuls, et Vice-Consuls de la nation la plus favorisée.

ARTICLE VI.

Their Majesties having stipulated, by Article XLIII of the said Treaty, that the nature and extent of the functions of the Consuls should be determined, "and that a Convention "relative to this point should be "concluded immediately after the

signature of the present Treaty, "of which it should be deemed to "constitute a part," it is agreed that the said ulterior Convention shall be settled within the space of two months, and that, in the mean time, the Consuls-General, Consuls, and Vice-Consuls shall conform to the the usages which are now observed, relative to the Consulship, in the respective dominions of the two Sovereigns; and that they shall enjoy all the privileges, rights, and immunities belonging to their office, and which are allowed to the Consuls-Generals, Consuls, and ViceConsuls of the most favoured nation.

ARTICLE VII.

Il sera libre aux sujets de Sa Majesté Britannique de poursuivre en France leurs débiteurs, pour le recouvrement de dettes contractées dans les Etats de Sa dite Majesté, ou ailleurs, en Europe, et d'y intenter action contre eux, en se conformant aux voyes de droit usitées dans le royaume: Bien entendu que le même usage aura lieu pour les Français dans les Etats Européens de Sa Majesté Britannique.

ARTICLE VIII.

Les Articles de la présente Convention seront ratifiés et confirmés par Sa Majesté Britannique, et par Sa Majesté Très Chrétienne, dans un mois, ou plus tôt, si faire se peut, après l'échange des signatures entre les Plénipotentiaires.

En foi de quoi, nous Ministres Plénipotentiaires avons signé la présente Convention, et y avons fait apposer le cachet de nos armes.

Fait à Versailles, le quinze Janvier, mil sept cent quatre-vingtsept.

ARTICLE VII.

It shall be lawful for the subjects of His Britannic Majesty to prosecute their debtors in France, for the recovery of debts contracted in the dominions of His said Majesty, or elsewhere, in Europe, and there to bring actions against them, in conformity to the practice of law in use in the kingdom: Provided that there shall be the like usage in favour of French subjects in the European dominions of His Britannic Majesty.

ARTICLE VIII.

The Articles of the present Convention shall be ratified and confirmed by His Britannic Majesty, and by His Most Christian Majesty, in one month, or sooner, if it can be done, after the exchange of signatures between the Plenipotentiaries.

In witness whereof, we the Ministers Plenipotentiary have signed the present Convention, and have caused the seals of our arms to be set thereto.

Done at Versailles, the fifteenth of January, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven.
