Recent archaeological discoveries in the Bible lands re-establish its early books as historical contemporaneous records of conditions as they existed in the days of the Patriarchs and Moses, it was stated in 1938 in New York City at the opening session of the Institutes of Biblical and Post-Biblical Literatures by Prof. William F. Albright, Biblical authority of Johns Hopkins University.

The first revision of the Baltimore Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church was published in 1941, according to an announcement by the Episcopal Committee of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Most of the answers of the old catechism, which has been widely used in parochial schools, have been simplified and modernized in terminology and treatment of subject matter. The Baltimore Catechism was published in 1891.

The work of revision, under the guidance of the committee, was carried on for six years by scholars and by all the bishops of the American hierarchy. Before publication it was submitted to the Sacred Congregation of the Council in Rome.

Peace on Earth-to Whom?

The Vulgate edition of the New Testament, published by the English College at Rheims in 1582 gives the 14th verse of the 2nd chapter of the Gospel of St. Luke as follows:

"Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis," which has been translated by: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will."

The Protestant, or King James, version divides the words into two phrases to read "Peace on

Earth, Good Will to Men," thus, it is contended
some scholars, interpreting into them a
by
double benediction of peace and good will, one
without dependence on the other.

Other scholars translate the Greek original of the Latin Vulgate to mean: "Peace, good pleasure among men," or "peace among the men of his good pleasure," or agam "the peace which comes of God's good pleasure is among men."

The Old Testament Latin Vulgate was first published by the English College at Douay in 1609.
