South-America.

The war between Paraguay and the allies was ended on the 1st of March by the defeat and death of President Lopez, on the Brazilian frontier. The remnants of his army dispersed, and his family, including his mistress, Madame Lynch, were taken to Rio de Janeiro and sent to Europe. A provisional government for Paraguay was formed at Asuncion, under the protection of Brazil, and went into successful operation in March. The allied armies returned to their respective countries in April, and on the 2d of May the Count d'Eu, the Brazilian Commander-in-Chief, had a magnificent reception at Rio de Ja neiro. In September, a revolution occurred at Asuncion. Rivarola was deposed, and Senor Machain was made Provisional Governor by a convention of deputies.
