The Epifle. 2 Cor. iii. 4.

UCH trust have we through Chrift to God-ward. Not that we are fufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our fufficiency is of God. Who alfo hath made us able ministers of the New Teftament; not of the letter, but of the Spirit: for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life. But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in ftones, was glorious? fo that the children of Ifrael could not stedfaftly behold the face of Mofes for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away; how fhall not the miniftration of the Spirit be rather glorious? For if the miniftration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the miniftration of righteoufnefs exceed in glory.

The Gospel. St Mark vii. 31.

ESUS departing from the coafts of Tyre and Sidon, came unto the fea of Galilee, through the midft of the coafts of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his fpeech; and they befeech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him afide from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he fpit, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he fighed, and faith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

PARAPHRASE.

On the COLLECT for the twelfth Sunday after Trinity.

O omnipotent and everlasting God, who art always better difpofed to hear our prayers than we are to offer them, and who art accustomed to grant us more good things than we can form a conception of or defire, and which we can by no means pretend to deferve, we beseech thee to let 1 partake of thy abundant mercy in forgiving numerous tranfgreffions wherewith our confciences are burdened, and which render us the objects of thy wrath, and in conferring upon us those bleffings which our many offences have rendered us unworthy to afk of thee; and this we requeit for the fake of thy Son our bleffed Saviour Jefus Chrift. Amen.

And straightway his ears were opened, and the ftring of his tongue was loofed, and he fpake plain. And he charged. them that they should tell no man; but the more he charged them, fo much the more a great deal they published it, and were beyond measure aftonifhed, faying, He hath done all things well; he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

The Epiftle. Gal. iii. 16.

NO Abraham and his feed were the promises made. He faith not, And to feeds, as of many; but as of one; And to thy feed, which is Chrift. And this I fay, that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Chrift, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot difannul, that it fhould make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promife; but God gave it to Abraham by promife. Wherefore then ferveth the law? It was added because of tranfgreffions, till the feed fhould come, to whom the promife was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

PARAPHRASE.

On the COLLECT for the thirteenth Sunday after Trinity.

O Almighty and ever gracious God, to whofe bountiful goodness we are indebted for this opportunity of offering up our prayers to thee, and praifing thee, we beseech thee to give us grace, that we may ferve thee with that devotion and obedience to thy commands in the prefent life, that we may obtain the glorious promises of the life to come; which we pray for the fake of Jefas Chrift our Lord. Amen.

Now

Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. Is the law then against the promifes of God? God forbid : tor if there had been a law given, which could have given life, verily righteoufnefs fhould have been by the law. But the fcripture hath concluded all under fin, that the promise by faith of Jefus Chrift might be given to them that believe.

And he anfwering, faid, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy foul, and with all thy ftrength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, thou haft antwered right; this do, and thou shalt live. But he willing to justify himfelf, faid unto Jefus, And who is my neighbour? And Jefus anfwering, faid, A certain man went down from Jerufalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which ftripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain prieft that way, and when he faw him, he paffed by on the other fide. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and paffed by on the other fide. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was; and when he faw him, he had compaffion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil, and wine, and fet him on his own beaft, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the holt, and faid unto him, Take care of him, and whatfcever theu fpendelt more, when I come again I will repay thee. The Collect.

Lmighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and that we may obtain that which thou doft promife, make us to love that which thou dost command, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epifle. Gal. v. 16.

Say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye fhall not fulfil the luft of the flesh. . For the flesh lufteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other; fo that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifeft, which are thefe, Adultery, fornication, uncleannefs, lafciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, ftrife, feditions, herefies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and fuch like; of the which I tell you before, as I have alfo told you in time paft, that they who do fuch things fhall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-fuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meeknefs, temperance: against fuch there is no law. And they that are Chrift's, have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lufts.
