Its valve gear consists of fewer pieces than are found in any other pump. All the parts move on parallel lines and central to the same vertical plane, so that all levers, connecting rods, rocker arms, springs, adjustable screws and other mechanical complications are avoided. Both the Main Valve and the Supplemental Valve are Flat Slide Valves, readily understood and easily reseated in case of wear. The Supplemental Piston is in one piece, and it is a piston, not a valve. Second, in the certainty of its action. The Supplemental Piston, which has a Compensating Steam Jacket, is driven by the direct pressure of steam on alternate ends, complemented, when necessary, by the whole power of the main engine, so that it runs equally well vertically or horizontally, exhausting into open air or into a condenser. The mechanical connection renders it absolutely certain that the valve shall always lead the piston, so that there is no possibility of any pounding on the cylinder heads, and the clearance in the cylinder is reduced to the minimum.
