WANDELL'S REPLY TO "SHALL WE BELIEVE IN MORMON"

[457] [MORMONS.] Wandell, C. W. Reply to "Shall we believe in Mormon." 24 pp., 8vo, half calf, caption-title as issued. Sydney, 1852. 350.00

ONE OF TWO KNOWN COPIES, the other being located in the Huntington Library. The Sydney imprints of the Mormon Church are very rare and, interestingly Wandell gives a list of them: History of the Book of Mormon; Proclamation; History of the Persecution; Hymn-Book; and the present title. Wandell had been present in Nauvoo during the exodus of 1846 and in 1850 actively refuted the claims of James J. Strang. He went on the Australian mission in 1850 and was elected to the Presidency of the Pacific Mission.

JOHN WHITMER'S LETTER TO THE COWDERYS: 1837

[458] [MORMONS.] Whitmer, John. Original autograph letter signed, addressed to Oliver and David Cowdery. 3 pp., 4to. Far West, Mo., August 29, 1837. 300.00

This letter was written by one of the eight witnesses to the Book of Mormon to two of the three special witnesses. At the time it was written, Whitmer was also the historian of the Mormon Church and associated in the presidency of the Missouri branch. The letter reflects the troubled state of affairs which would end by shaking the Church to its foundations, and result within the year in the separation from it of both Cowdery and Whitmer. Whitmer here tells his brother-in-law, Cowdery, that he may write him in entire confidence "on any subject," inasmuch as W. W. Phelps is postmaster and can insure that incoming mail will "remain in obscurity." He and Phelps have reserved lots for Cowdery in the Far West city plot. Adverting to the difficulties over land rights which never ceased during the history of the Church in Missouri, Whitmer writes that the brethren are becoming impatient to receive titles to their lands. They have some timbered land for Cowdery which they will let him have "for the Press & Type" they anticipate he will bring to Missouri. This is possibly the earliest announcement of the intention to establish a paper at Far West, which Whitmer hopes can be accomplished by the first of January following.

THE ONLY KNOWN COPY OF WILLES' MORMONISM

[459] [MORMONS.] Willes, William. What is Mormonism? Compiled from the writings of the Elders, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, John Taylor, Orson Spencer, Samuel Brannan, and others of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; by William Willes, presiding elder of the Calcutta Branch. 10 pp., 8vo, half calf. Calcutta: N. Robertson, Columbia press, 1852. 400.00

THE ONLY KNOWN COPY, and one of only a few known productions of_the Mormon Church to issue from its remote outpost in Calcutta. The work contains John Taylor's "The Organization of the Church"; Sam Brannan's treatise on the one true system; Pratt's life of Joseph Smith; the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith; the testimony of the three witnesses; and a description of the Doctrines and Covenants with comments on various revelations.

[460] [MORMON WAR]. Gove, Capt. J. A. The Utah expedition 1857-8. Letters of Capt. Jesse A. Gove to Mrs. Gove, and special correspondence of the N. Y. Herald. Edited by Otis G. Hammond. Plates. 4to, original boards. Concord, 1928.

35.00

One of 50 copies privately printed on large paper. Gove was a member of the Utah Expedition which was sent to Utah in 1857 to "preserve order" and "obedience to law." His narrative is a primary source and almost the only one aside from governmental records for the history of the Mormon War and the events of the overland during 1857-58.
