idea of his being father to Mr. John Ives, Apr. 27. efq; to Mifs Acton.'

F.A.S. who died in June 1776, as the prefent chief magiftrate of that city is the only fon of the deceased Alderman who lived to maturity. Mr. John Ives was the fon of a gentleman now living at Yarmouth, who, if at all, was very diftantly related to the family at Norwich. ICENIENSIS.

P. 300. Dr. Scot's tranflation of Homer was intituled, "An Effay towards a Tranflation of Homer's Works, in Blank Verfe, with Notes. By Jofeph Med Scott, M.D. 1755" 4to. being a tranflation of felect paffages from the Iliad.

P. 308. It is a conftant practice for the congregation to repeat the Lord's Prayer aloud, in whatever part of the fervice it occurs. It is believed the general form of the "confused murmuring" before the Gofpel is, Glory be to thee, O Lord!" perhaps taken from the fong of the Angels on the first publication of good tidings.

As to briefs, no collection can be more public than in a place and on a day where the whole parish are fuppofed to be gathered together. unless the Gazette gave notice gratis that the minifter and churchwardens were to carry every brief from houfe to house.

The Lords of Council need not be confined to the Privy Council, but extend to his Majesty's Ministers, as every King of England had fome council or advisers.

P. 366. The rev. Weftrow Hulfe was the fon of Sir Edward H. hart. He accompanied Sir Eyre Coote in his last voyage to the Faft Indies, being appointed chaplain to the Company. He was feized with the epidemical diforder of that climate not many months before his return to England, which was in July 17834 and never recovered from it. In vol. LIV. p. 717, it is noticed that he preached at the funeral of Sir Eyre Coote; qu. was the fermon published?-Mr. H. was the first, and it is thought will be the laft, chaplain to the East India Company, the Directors being of opinion, that a chapJain is an unneceffary cfficer upon their eftablishment: and the exemplary conduct. with respect to both religion and morals, of their fervants in that part of the world, affords an unquestionable proof that they stand not in need of any fpiritual inftructions and admonitions.

DEATHS.

ATELY, at Southampton, Sir Edmund Thomas, bart. He is fucceeded in title by his brother, now Sir John T. bart.

Mar. 18. At Newcastle upon. Tyne, aged 68, John Rotheram, M.D. physician to the Infirmary and Lying-in Hofpital in that town. He was fon of the rev. Caleb R. D.D. a diffenting clergyman, many years tutor of an academy at Kendal in Weftmorland. Under the care of his worthy parent he acquired his claffical learning, and alfo applied to the ftudy of history, metaphyfics, natural and moral philofophy. In 174c he was fent to the univerfity of Edinburgh, where his knowledge and talents were feen obferved by the celebrated Mr. Maclaurin, who propofed to him to read a courfe of lectures on experimental philofophy, and favoured him with his countenance and advice. Thefe lectures were attended and approved by a numerous and most respectable audience, and the profits arifing from them were appropriated to the Public Infirmary then building at Edinburgh. After saying the ufual time in that juftly-diftinguished school of medicine, he removed to London, and purfued his ftudies under the direction of the late Dr. Smellie. Qualified as he was by natural genius and difcernment, and the advantages of education, he began to practife as a phyfician at Hexham, but foon after fixed at Newcastle, where numbers will bear teftimony to his abilities, atfiduity, and ufefulness. His memory will be refpected by the inhabitants of that place, not only for his attainments in fcience and fkill in his profeilion, but alfo for that benevolence and humanity which marked his character. Two days in a week his houfe was open to the fick poor, for whom he chearfully preferibed, and often contributed to their relief. He regularly vifited the prifoners ju the gael, without any reward but the confcioufnefs of doing good; an inftance of compaffion which Mr. Howard mentions to his honour, as rather uncommou, in his " Inquiry into the State of Prifons." In the year 1769 he was defired by the magiftrates to analyze the different waters with which that populous town is fupplied, an object of great importance. He engaged in this work with alacrity and attention, and laid before the public an explanation of his procefs, and the refults of his

various experiments. But his views were not confined to the analysis of the Newcaftle waters: his investigation of this fubject in general, and his remarks on many other waters, are truly ingenious, and are contained in a treatise, intituled, "A Philofophical Inquiry into the Nature and Properties of Water. Newcastle, 1770."—He married Catherine dau. of Nicholas Roberts, efq; of Hexham, and has left a widow and seven children.

John Wright, efq; of Hatfield Peyerel, Effex, formerly an eminent coachmaker in Long Acre. He purchased the old manfion on the fite of the abbey, and rebuilt it.

9. At Bruffels, Anthony Jofeph Browne, Vifcount Montague. He was lineally dee fcended from Sir Anthony Browne, master of the horfe to Henry VIII. and one of his executors, whose son was created Viscount Mountague 1 & 2 Philip and Mary. The late Lord was born 1728, married 1765 Francis daughter of lerbert Mackworth, efq; and relict of Lord Halkerton, by whom he has left a fon, born 1769, and a dau. 1767.

23. At Rome, in an apoplectic fit, aged 80, Cardinal Francis Dolci. He was created a Cardinal on the 26th April, 1773.

6. Right hon. Frederic St. John, Lord Viscount Bolingbroke. He fucceeded his uncle, the celebrated Henry St. John, 2d Vifcount, 1751, and was a lord of the bedchamber 1761. He married . Lady Diana Spenfer, eldest daughter of Charles Duke of Marlborough, from whom he was divorced 1763, having had by her two fons, GeorgeRichard, born 1761, Frederic, born 1763, and a dau. Charlotte, who died young-G. R. the prefent Viscount, married. 1783, Charlotte dau. of the rev Mr. Collins of Winchefter. [See p. 407.]

In the last parliament he represented one of the ministerial boroughs.-The bulk of his fortune, which is very confiderable, comes between his two fifters.

Mr. Thomas Athmore, of Elv-place. 10. In Lincoln's-inn-fields, of a paralytic affection, Sir William Wation, F.R.S. and member of the college of phyficians, and a trustee of the British Museum. He was knighted on carrying up the addrefs of the college on the King's efcape from aflaffination. His clofe attention to ice, and his numerous communication to the Royal Society on various fubjects of medicine, natu

ral history, botany, zoology, electricity, meteorology, &c. as well as his extenfive practice in his profeffion, will render his name juftly celebrated among the phyficians of Great Britain.-He ferved his time to an apothecary in Alderfgate-street, where he paid a close attention to chemistry, and, from practising in this line, foon raised himself to the rank of M.D. He has left one fon, formerly a physician, but retired to Bath, and a daughter, married to the rev. Mr. Beadon, brother to to the master of Jefus college, Camb. who has a numerous offfpring. In Salisbury-street, Strand, rev.- -John Bowen, many years rector of St. John's parish in Antigua.
