JUBILEE OF THE REFORMATION.

IT is just three hundred years since the people of England received the entire Scriptures in their own language. The first complete translation of the Bible into English, ever published, was that made by Myles Coverdale, on the last page of which are these words :"Prynted in the yeare of our Lorde, M.D.XXXV., and fynished the fourth day of October." It has been suggested,

that, on the fourth of October next, being the third centenary of this most important event, Christian Ministers might profitably direct the attention of their congregations to the Reformation and its endless blessings; especially while so many agencies are employed to bring back again the darkness and misery of Popery.

METHODIST QUARTERLY FAST-DAY.

*** The next Quarterly Fast-Day for the Methodist Societies, according to the Rules of the Connexion, will be Friday, Oct. 2d, 1835.

MISSIONARY NOTICES,

Relating principally to the FOREIGN MISSIONS carried on under the direction of the METHODIST CONFERENCE.

MISSIONS IN CEYLON.

NORTH-CEYLON.-Extract of a Letter from Mr. Percival, dated Jaffna,
January 7th, 1835.

IN October, my intention to open an English school in Jaffna, for native pupils principally, was very extensively circulated in Jaffna and its vicinity; and as I required any who might wish to avail themselves of its advantages to come and enter their names, I was able soon to estimate the probable interest it might excite among the natives. During the month of October upwards of one hundred and fifty boys were entered upon my book. The school premises being very much out of repair, and, in some respects, requiring alteration, I laid out a considerable sum in making preparation. On the 4th of November the boys assembled, to the number of one hundred and eightysix. Many of these boys have been taught in our native schools, and, so far, have an evident advantage in entering upon the routine of study in the English school. In the arrangement of classes, and the introduction of the system of tuition, which is here quite new, and had, therefore, to be taught to the monitors, several days were spent; but we have now got the whole into a regular train; and the school is gaining the confidence of the natives. At present, we have nearly three hundred pupils on the school-register, of whom two hundred and sixty are in daily attendance. The school is divided into eight classes, and is under the care of four monitors, one Tamil teacher, myself, and assistants. The four monitors, and one Tamil teacher, are an aggregate expense of thirty

nine rixdollars per mensem, or £2. 18s. 6d. I spend three hours in the school every day; and the Assistants-Solomon Valloopulle and John Matthies-do the same. The first class, consisting of fortytwo boys, contains several boys who have, in various ways, picked up considerable knowledge of the English language. With this class I spend upwards of an hour every morning, in reading the New Testament in English, with a Tamil translation. The object for having a Tamil teacher is to teach the younger boys Tamil, and to keep up in the more advanced boys a knowledge of their own language; and as the holy Scriptures are extensively used in this branch of our process, they are hereby made well acquainted with the doctrines of the Gospel.

The Tamil teacher was formerly my school-superintendent, at Trincomalee; and, in addition to his work in the English school, is required to visit one Tamil school every morning.

Mrs. Percival and Miss Ashton have a superior kind of school, at the Missionhouse, which yields a small sum monthly to the Mission. This hitherto has been applied to the repairs of the premises, which are in a most complete state of dilapidation.

Since my arrival here, I have established a native school at Areéyákólom, about half a mile from the Mission-house, in which we have seventy boys and seven girls. We have not yet been able to erect a bungalow for its accommodation,
