EXPLANATORY STATEMENT.

It will be seen by the foregoing statements that the adjusted balance in the hands of the Treasurer of the United States on the 1st January, 1851, is.....

But he has received and directed the payment of sundry warrants, not returned at the time of settlement, and consequently not charged in the account, the amount of which, as he has given conditional credit for them to the different depositaries, lessens so much the above balance, per statement B......

In addition to which the Treasurer holds in his hands various sums deposited to his credit, for which warrants have not been issued, and which, consequently, cannot as yet be legally charged to his account, but which are properly to be added to the above, per statement C......

Making the sum as actually at his credit, in the various depositaries, mints, and the several States, as exhibited per statement A:

I have examined and adjusted the account of William Selden, Treasurer of the United States, commencing on the 1st day of October, 1850, and ending on the 31st day of December, 1850, and find that he is chargeable with and accountable to the United States for the following sums, viz:

To balance of his account ending September 30, 1850, per report No. 105,266....

To amount of sundry warrants drawn in his favor for moneys received from the 1st of October to the 31st of December, 1850, inclusive, arising as follows:

From duties laid on goods, wares and merchandise imported into the United States, and on tonnage of ships and vessels.....
