that they are not ignorant that divers Powers of the Romish Communion look upon this Enterprize of Gregory VII. to be fo feditious, so contrary to the public Peace, and of fo dangerous confequence, that they will not allow any Ufe to be made thereof in their Dominions: And moreover, that it is also too evident that they have made ufe of divers Stratagems for introducing among the Roman Catholics of the United Provinces, the famous Conftitution Unigenitus, and that they are continually labouring to oblige them to accept it as a Rule of Faith, notwithstanding that not only the Proteftants, but also many eminent Roman Catholics do with great reafon find the faid Conftitution to be contrary to the Foundations of public Tranquil lity, and the Security of the Perfons and Government of fupreme Authority: For thefe Causes, they have thought proper, for the Prefervation of public Peace, for the Security of the Government, and the truly Reformed Proteftant Religion, to decree and order, against the Enterprizes and Machinations of the Adherents to the Romish See, First, That the leaft Ufe fhall not be made in the Provinces of Holland and West-Friesland, either in Public or Private, of the faid Office of Pope Gregory VII. upon Penalty that those Romifh Priefts who fhall offend against the fame fhall be effectually punished as Disturbers of the public Peace; and that thofe Romish Churches, Chapels, or other Affemblies in which the faid Office fhall be used for the future, fhall be fhut up for the space of fix Months, Secondly, That the faid Office fhall not be printed in the faid Provinces, nor brought from abroad to be published, or fold either feparately or or as it is printed at the End of the Directo rium of the Mafs and Ceremonies of the Church of Rome and that no mention fhall be made thereof in the enfuing Editions of the faid Directorium: And all this upon the Penalty of a Fine of 1000 Florins from any Perfon that shall offend in thefe Cafes, the half of which fhal go to the Officers, and the other to the Informer; and alfo to be deprived of the Benefit of Trade.
