fame manner by these prefents, to the subjects and inhabitants of the faid dutchies, all their oaths and obligations by which they were bound to her majefty and the kingdom of Sweden, and tranferring them by the fame to his majefty of Great Britain, as duke and elector of Brunswick' and Lunenburg, and to his heirs, as their present sole and perpetual fovereign lord; and in like manner the chapter of Hamburg and that of Bremen, together with the perfons appertaining to the latter, fubjects, tenants in fief, farmers and tributaries, as well in the town of Bremen, as those who live in what are called the four Gohen of Bremen, and all other places which are there, fhall be by virtue of these presents freed from their faid oaths and engagements taken to the crown and kingdom of Sweden, and made over to his Britannick Majesty, as duke and elector of Brunswick and Lunenburg, and his heirs.

Her Swedish Majefty, for herself and her fucceffors, does, by virtue of thefe prefents, again renounce the jura feudi which she and her predeceffors had, on account of the duchies of Bremen and Verden, acquired of the emperors and the holy empire, and hitherto enjoyed; and transfers the faid jura feudi in like manner to his Britannick Majefty and his heirs.

And the archives and documents which relate to the duchies of Bremen and Verden, fhall bona fide, with all the speed poffible, be put into the hands of persons named and authorised by his Britannick Majefty, to receive them.

IV. His Britannick Majefty, as duke and elector of Brunswick and Lunenburg, does as well for himself as his heirs, promise and engage on his part to the states, fubjects, and all the inhabitants of the country, both in the towns of the faid duchies of Bremen and Verden, and all places that do or may depend thereon, no perfon excepted, and confequently to every one of them, to maintain and defend their juftly acquired liberties, eftates, rights and privileges, in general and particular, in the fame manner as the faid ftates, fubjects and inhabitants enjoyed and poffeffed them, and as they were granted to them by the peace of Weftphalia, as well as the free exercife of the two religions; according to the Augfburg confeffion, as to which

they fhall at all times be left to their free choice, without moleftation.

And in cafe that either the one or the other is not yet actually confirmed in the expectatives of certain prebends of the chapter of Hamburg, granted by the former kings of Sweden, or bought of others, fuch expectatives, according to their rights and origin, fhall remain entire ; in fuch manner nevertheless, that for the future, when a vacancy happens, no body fhall be preferred to those who are the bearers of them.

V. The reduction and liquidation established every where by the preceding government of Sweden, having given occafion to many grievances of the fubjects and inhabitants, the late king of Sweden of glorious memory, in juftice to the caufe, was determined to give a fecurity by letters patent, that in cafe any of the fubjects could prove, that any eftate juftly belonging to them had been taken from them, their right fhould be preferved; in confequence of which feveral were reftored to the poffeffion of their eftates formerly difputed, or fequeftered by virtue of the faid reduction, or any other pretext; which right has been again confirmed to them fince, by their last affembly of the 30th of May laft.

It is therefore agreed and stipulated by these presents, between the two contracting fovereigns, that the ceffion made of the duchies of Bremen and Verden, by the aforefaid third article of the present treaty, shall not prejudice the rights and just pretenfions of the fubjects and inhabitants of the faid duchies, or their heirs, living intra vel extra territorium; but the fame fhall be maintained by his Britannick Majefty, as elector of Brunswick and Lunenburg, to all intents and purposes in the fame manner as they are now by her Swedish Majefty, and as they may be certified now or hereafter.

VI. In like manner, pursuant to what is ftipulated by the fecond article concerning the amnefty, the estates, houses and properties of any persons whatsoever, who had been put under arreft by reafon of the war, fhall be reftored and returned to the lawful proprietors, whether they live intra vel extra territorium.

VII. Nevertheless, all negotiations actually made in the faid duchies, and during the Swedish regency, publico nomine, till the faid duchies were invaded by his Danish Majefty, by reafon of debts and farms which were levied and carried into the royal cheft, and the fums put into it. by the faid regency, fhall remain in full force, in fuch manner that the creditors, and those who have legal bonds in confequence of their loans of money, and mortgages truly furrendered, fhall enjoy the contracts which they have in their hands, and the engagements included therein, till by virtue of their contracts they are quite expired, and their monies advanced are all paid; at which time the eftates, and houses fituate or belonging in and to the faid duchies, fo engaged to the faid creditors, fhall become the property of his Britannick Majefty, as duke and elector of Brunfwick and Lunenburg and his fucceffors, and fhall be incorporated in his chamber. But the ftates fhall be obliged to pay every thing negotiated upon the bonds and fecurity of the said states.

VIII. His Britannick Majefty promifeth by these prefents, not only as king, but also as duke and elector of Brunswick and Lunenburg, to renew from henceforth with her majefty, and the kingdom of Sweden, the ftri&t alliances and treaties of friendship heretofore established with the predeceffors of her majefty and the kingdom of Sweden, as well as the guaranties, which by virtue of the treaty of peace concluded between the allies of the North, or by that which may be concluded hereafter, fhall be applied to the advantage of the ducal houfe of Holstein Gottorp, and to regulate the fame according to the present jun&ure of affairs.

Moreover, his Britannick Majefty, as duke and elector of Brunswick, engages to pay at Hamburg to her Swedish Majefty the fum of a million of rix dollars, in new and valid pieces of single and double marks or drittels, according to the allay of Leipfic in the year 16ço, of which each fine mark of filver was worth 12 current dollars. And it is fettled, that one third of the faid fum, viz. 333.333 rixdollars, fhall be paid at Hamburg to her Swedish Majefty upon her receipts, before the figning of this inflrument of peace, which fhall accordingly remain

in force; and the rest of the said million of rixdollars fhall be paid speedily, and without fail at Hamburg all at once, upon proper affignments and acquittances, in five or fix weeks time after the exchange of the ratifications of this treaty of peace.

IX. The treaty of Weftphalia, except where it is altered by this treaty, or otherwife where it may be altered by treaties that may be concluded in the North, fhall remain in its full force and efficacy; and the two contracting fovereigns engage themselves feverally to do every thing that fhall be judged neceffary for the obfervation of the faid treaty of Weftphalia.

X. The two contracting fovereigns referve to themfelves by this article to demand and accept his Imperial Majefty's guarantee for this treaty, and that of other powers, according to the circumftance of affairs.

XI. The ratifications of this peace fhall be dispatched in two months time at fartheft, and exchanged one with the other here at Stockholm.

XII. In witness of the above, two copies, both of one and the fame tenor, have been made, which have been figned and fealed by the plenipotentiaries of the two contracting fovereigns, of which one has been given to each party. Done at Stockholm, the 20th of November, 1719. Signed,
