Of the 1st Book of Kings.

Lesson I. Chap. xiv.

AND the LORD said unto Ahijah,

Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman. And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy

king, Rehoboam consulted with the old men that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that Í may answer this people? And they spaketidings. unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and

answer them, and speak good words Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus saith the

to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him.

Lesson III.

AND the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him: and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat. So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse.

LORD GOD of Israel, Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel, and rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in mine

eyes;

but

hast done evil above all that were before thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back.

Lesson III.

THEREFORE, behold, I will bring

evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone. Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat for the LORD hath spoken it. Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine

own house and when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die. Ry. I took thee. p. xxvii.

Lesson I. Chap. xviii.

AND Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long_halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be GoD, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

Ry. I have sinned. p. xxviii.

Lesson II.

LET them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be GOD. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

Ry. Thou hast heard. p. xxviii.
Lesson III.

AND Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud.

But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a GoD in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? FOR, not to speak of other things, we know the boundaries by which the kingdom of Solomon was limited; and yet we read in that psalm: His dominion shall be also from the one sea to the other, and from the flood unto the

world's end; which we see accomplished in CHRIST. For He began His kingdom from the flood, where, being baptized by John, and pointed out by him, He began to be acknowledged by the disciples, who called Him, not only Master, but Lord also.
