evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Lesson III.

NOW therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the

sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD. Lesson II.

ND the LORD said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel. And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel. And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Lo-ruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away. But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their GOD, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

Lesson IV.

Book 18. Chap. 28.
THE prophet Hosea, on account of

the depth of his sayings, requires the more labour to penetrate his meaning. But something is to be drawn from this, and to be placed here as a promise for us. And it shall come to pass, he says, that in the place

where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living GOD. This testimony of the prophet concerning the calling of the Gentiles, who formerly did not belong to GOD, was understood even by the Apostles. Ry. I have. p. cxlix.

says, that, The children of Israel shall
abide many days without a king, and
without a prince, and without a sacri-

priesthood, and without teraphim.

condition of the Jews?

Of Hosea the Prophet.

Lesson I. Chap. iv. HEAR the word of the LORD, ye

children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of GoD in the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the " fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. If we wish to expound this, the freshness of the prophet's words will be impaired. However we may call to mind the corner stone and the two walls, the one, Jews, the other, Gentiles; called the sons of Judah, the other, the sons of Israel, leaning together upon one and the same prince; and they may be recognised as they go up in the land.

THE
HE vision of Obadiah. Thus saith
the LORD GOD concerning Edom;
We have heard a rumour from the
LORD, and an ambassador is sent
among the heathen, Arise ye, and let
us rise up against her in battle.
Behold, I have made thee small among
the
heathen: thou art greatly
despised. The pride of thine heart
hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest
in the clefts of the rock, whose
habitation is high; that saith in his
heart, Who shall bring me down to
the ground? Though thou exalt thy-
self as the eagle, and though thou set
thy nest among the stars, thence will
I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up! Lesson I. Chap. i.

cause this evil is upon us. So they cast
lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Lesson III.

THEN said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then said thee, that the sea may be calm unto they unto him, What shall we do unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

OW the word of the LORD came unto
Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city,
and cry against it; for their wicked-
ness is come up before me. But
Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish
from the presence of the LORD, and
went down to Joppa; and he found a
ship going to Tarshish: so he paid
the fare thereof, and went down into
it, to go with them unto Tarshish
