Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.
But we all with open Face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are chan
ged into the same Image, from glory to glo:: ry, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
The Meaning of this whole passage, is This : The Lord is That Spirit, that is, Christ (or the Gospel of Christ) is the true Intent and Spirit (in opposition to the dead Letter and Burdensom Rites) of the Law: And we all, that is, we Christians, (in opposition to the Jews, who have still the Veil of Ignorance over their Face,) beholding with open Face (that is, clearly and distinctly, not in Types and Shadows,) the glory of the Lord; are changed into the same Image, from glory to glory; as by the Spirit of the Lord. These last words, [xatáweg doo Kuois mvbu parQ,) are very ambiguous, and may equally signify either (as by the Lord the Spirit,] or [as by the Lord of the Spirit,] or [as by the Spirit of the Lord.] Which laft rendring, is followed by our Translators, and is most agreeable to the Sense of the place, and to the Tenour of Seripture.
