689. Joh. V; 22, 23. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

That all men fhould bonour the Son, *even as they honour the Father: He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which bath fent him.

* Καθώς τιμῶσι τ πατέρα. The Meaning is not, that the Sons Authority fhould, like. That of the Father, be looked upon as Underived, Abfolute, Supreme, and Independent; but that, as the Jews already believed in God, fo they fhould alfo for the future believe in Christ, chap. xiv, 1; As they already honoured God the Father, fo they should alfo for the future honour the Son of God; honour him, as having All judgment committed unto him; honour him, to the Honour of the Father which fent him; acknowledge him to be Lord, to the Glory of God the Father.

690. Acts i, 24. Thou Lord, which knowest the Hearts of all men, fhew whether of these Two thou hast chosen.

It is ambiguous, whether thefe Words are dire&ted to Chrift, or to God the Father: Though, becaufe of Chrifts chufing the reft of the Apoftles, it feems rather more natural to suppose the Words directed to Him.

To call on the Name of Chrift, being a Phrase used in great Variety of Senfes, and, with fome other Synonymous Expreffions, fignifying fometimes, believ ing in him, acknowledging him as our Saviour, openly profelfing

fessing our selves Christians, or being baptized in his Name; fometimes invoking his Name upon difeafed Perfons, in order to a miraculous Cure; fometimes praying in his Name, or through his Interceffion; fometimes directbly calling upon, or invoking him; and fometimes perhaps feveral of thefe Significations being joined promiscuoufly: It may not be improper to let down the feveral Paflages, that the Reader may compare them together in One View.
