PREFACE.

1. IT is a general complaint, and it seems, a just one, that most of our periodical Publications, do not continue the fame as they began, but in a little time lofe their Spirit. In a few years, perhaps in a few months or weeks, the publishers have (as we fay) wrote themselves out. They have exhaufted their flock, or at least the most useful and valuable part of it: and what remains is little calculated either to entertain or to profit the fenfible Reader.

2. For many years this remark has been made concerning Magazines in particular. An immenfe multitude of these has lately appeared in England, Scotland, Ireland, and America. But how fmall a number of them has retained the fame Spirit for any confiderable time? Yet fome have done it: I believe the laft of the Chriftian Magazines, was not inferior to the firft. And I fuppofe the Gentleman's Magazine has preferved its spirit for upwards of forty years together.

3. And I believe the impartial Reader will allow, that the Arminian Magazine has not declined hitherto. He will cafily obferve, that neither the Profe nor Verfe publifhed
