HE following pieces, the produce of pure nature only, and most of them wrote at a very early age, stand so much in need of an apology for their appearance in the world, that the author can affure her readers, they would fcarce have been troubled with them upon any confiderations of her own. Her friends had often defired her to collect something of this fort for the press; but the difficulties, or, more properly, the dread of fuch an undertaking, together with the respect she had for them, the world, and herself, always kept fuch a thought at the greatest distance imaginable. Nor had he at length prevailed with herself to fet about fo difagreeable a task, but for the fake of a relation, grown old and helpless thro' a feries of misfortunes; and whom she had no other methods of effectually affifting. This her numerous and generous fubfcribers have put it into her power to do; and therefore she cannot but take this public opportunity of giving them their share of the fa

tisfaction; as well as of acknowledging, in the most respectful manner, the favour as done to herself.

As the fuccefs of the work is entirely fubmitted to their candour, to plead the many difadvantages, the almoft perpetual interruptions that have attended it, and last of all, the death of the dearest and beft of mothers, when it was near its publication, would perhaps be unnecessary; but whatever its fate may be, the vanity of the author will have very little to answer for, fince it will fcarce be read with greater reluctance than it was printed. The poetry she can fay nothing to; it being quite accidental, that her thoughts ever rambled into rhyme. And as to the letters, the ladies to whom they are addrefs'd having thought proper to preferve them, is the best apology she can make for them.

Some errors they will meet with of the press, but many more, fhe fears, of the author.
