is hateful before God and Man: And by both doth one commit Iniquity. Why is Earth and Afhes proud? for when a Man is dead he fhall inherit creeping Things, Beafts and Worms. The beginning of Pride is, when one departeth from God, and his Heart is turned away from his Maker. For Pride is the beginning of Sin, and he that hath it, fhall pour out Abomination : And therefore the Lord brought upon them strange Calamities, and overthrew them utterly.

The Lord hath caft down the Thrones of proud Princes, and fet up the Meek in their ftead. The Lord hath plucked up the Roots of proud Nations, and planted the lowly in their Place: Pride was not made for Men, nor furious anger for them that are born of a Woman.

Prov. xiii. 10. Only by Pride cometh Contention: But with the Well-advifed is Wisdom.

Ecclefi, xiii. 1. He that toucheth Pitch fhall be defiled therewith, and he that hath Fellowship with a proud Man, fhall be like unto him.

Ecclef. xxvii. 15. The Strife of the Proud is Blood-fhedding, and their Revilings are grievous. to the Ear.

O foolish Man! which doth give Way to Pride,
If you'd remember those your Friends who dy'd;
They're Food for Worms, and do rot in the
Clay,

Then why fhould you to Infolence give Way?

OMANS xiii. 1, 2, 3, 4. Let every Soul be fubject to the higher Powers, for there is no Power but of God; the Powers that be, are ordained of God. For Rulers are not a Terror to good Works, but to the Evil: Wilt thou then not be afraid of the Power? do that which is good, and thou fhalt have Praise of the fame; for he is the Minister of God, to thee for good, but if thou do that which is Evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the Sword in vain, for he is the Minifter of God, a Revenger to execute Wrath upon him that doth Evil.
