Excerpt from Crumbs Are Also Bread

Six years have passed since my first small volume of essays and reviews was sent forth on its adventures. T 0 those readers who gave it a kindly welcome I extend my thanks. During the last five of those years we have faced some rather testing experiences. Nor have the clouds yet entirely lifted. The definitions of luxuries and necessities have somewhat changed. And yet it is a comforting thought that, in the trials which have beset mankind during what has been known as the great depression, people have not read fewer but more books and have turned to litera ture to find that it is one of the cheapest as well as one of the greatest, pleasures in life.

I am not immodest enough to suggest that this present volume is literature spelt with a big L. But the old Danish proverb, chosen here for a title, tells us that crumbs are also bread and so. If any of the crumbs now gathered together afford the slightest nourishment to a reader here and there, I should be an ungrateful dog if I were not pleased. Many of the chapters in this book appeared in the Ottawa J ourhal and are reprinted here by the permission of the owners. Three of them saw the light in the pages of the Toronto Star Weekly, and are reproduced here with that paper's consent. Other chapters have not hitherto been published. The sketches of English Life and character were written five years ago, and many changes have taken place since that time. Yet, in the main, the pictures I then ventured to draw still hold good.
