the LORD came unto Jonah the were in Egypt in Pharaoh's ZECHARIAH. Zech. 1, 7. Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darins, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, (the son of Barachial, the son of Iddo,) the prophet, saying. Zech. iv, 8. Moreover, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying. Zech. vi, 9. And the word of the LORD caine unto me, saying. Zech. vii, 1, 4, 8. And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD the Zechariah in cume unto fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu; Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying, And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying. Zech, vill, 1, 18. Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying. II. THE QUALIFICATION. Num xi, 25-27. And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, aud took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the spirit rested upon them, (and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle,) and they prophesied in the camp. And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. 1 Sam. ii, 27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they 1 Sam. ix, 10. Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was. 2 Sam. xxiv, 11. For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying. 1 Kings xiii, 14. And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth: and the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I com 2 Kings iii, 12, 13. And Jehosha-mand thee: be not dismayed at phat said, The word of the LORD their faces, lest I contound thee is with him. So the king of Israel, before them. And the LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings. Jer. xv, 19, 21. Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thon return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me; and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thon shalt be as my return unto mouth: let them thee; but return not thou unto them. And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible. Ezek, ii, 6. And thou, son of not afraid of them, man, be neither be afraid of their words: though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house. Ezek. ill, 8, 24. Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads. Then the Spirit entered into me, spake with me, and said unto me, and set me upon my feet, and Go, shut thyself within thine house. Amos ill, 7. Surely the Lord GoD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. Micah iii, 8. But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his trausgression, and to Israel his sin. Luke 1, 67. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying. 1 Sam. x, 6, 9-13. And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. And it was so, that, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day. And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets? And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets? And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place. 1 Sam. xix, 20-23. And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu; and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah. And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he commanded thee. God But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of the which the LORD did say to thee. Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. III. THE COMMUNICATION. Num. xii, 6, 7. And he said, Hear now my words; If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. 1 Sam. iii, 21. And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. For I fear they shall know that I am the LORD. Ezek. xxxili, 22. Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came, and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb. Amos iii, 8. The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord God hath spoken, who can but prophesy? Heb. i, 1. God, who at sundry times, and in divers manners, spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets. Heb. iv, 1. After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be hereafter. IV THE PROPHETS. Num. xxii, 8, 18-20, 38. And he said unto them, Lodge here this Jer. xx, 9, 10. Then I sald, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name: but his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, FIDELITY ON THE PART OF and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. heard the defaming of many, on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. Ezek ii, 1, 2. And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet and I will speak unto thee. And the spirit entered into me, when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me. Ezek. iii, 22, 23, 27. And the hand of the LORD was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee. Then I arose, and went forth into the plain; and, behold, the glory of the LORD stood there, as the night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me. And the princes of Moab abode with Balaam. And the servants of Balak, If Balak Balaam answered and said unto would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go be yond the word of the LORD my Now God, to do less or more. therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this might, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more. And God came unto Balaam at night, and said call thee, rise up, and go with unto him, If the men come to them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do. And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to went on and prophesied, until he glory which I saw by the river of Say any thing? the word that God Came to Naioth in Rumah. He said But when I speak with thee, I unto him, I am a prophet also as will open thy mouth, and thou thou art; and an angel spake unto shalt say unto them, Thus saith me by the word of the LORD, say- the Lord GOD. He that heareth, ing, Bring him back with thee let him hear, and he that forbearinto thine house, that he may eateth, let him forbear: for they are bread and drink water. But he a rebellious house. lied unto him. So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water. And it cune to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judal, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment, which the LORD thy Ezek. xxiv, 27. In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I am the LORD Ezek. xxix, 21. In that day will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud forth, and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and putteth in my mouth, that shail I speak. Num, xxiii, 5, 11-13, 16-18, 26, 27. And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak. And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mi e enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether. And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth? And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all; and curse me them from thence. And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus. And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken? And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor: But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, say ing, all that the LORD speaketh, them from thence. all this vision, so did Nathan Isc. xxi, 10. O my threshing, the LORD, Stand in the court of not a word. that I must do? And Balak said Num. xxiv, 12, 13. And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers, which thou sentest unto me, saying. If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? Num. xxix, 40. And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses. 1 Sam. I, 15-18. And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LOED. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am 1. And he said. What is the thing that the LORD bath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. And Samuel teld him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD; let him do what seemeth him good. 1 Sam. xv, 16. Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. 2 Sam. vii, 17. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. 1 Kings xxii, 13, 14. And the messenger that was gone to call Micaiali spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth; let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one Jer. xlii, 4. Then Jeremiah the Ezek. ii, 10, 11. Moreover, he Ezek. xi, 25. Then I spake unto me. V. CERTAINTY OF FULFIL- 1 Sam. iii, 12. In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. 1 Kings xiii, 82. For the saying which he cried by the word of the and against all the houses of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass. and took the ashes away from his 1 Kings xx, 41, 42. And be hasted, face; and the king of Israel dis shall go for his life, and thy people for his people. 2 Kings il, 10. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. Jer. xxviil. 5, 6. Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of all the people that stood in the the priests, and in presence of house of the LORD, Even the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen: the LORD do so; the LORD perprophesied, to bring again the form thy words which thou hast vessels of the LORD's house, and all that is carried away captive, from Babylon into this place. of man, thus saith the Lord GoD Ezek. vii, 2, 5-7. Also, thou son the end is come upon the four unto the land of Israel, An end, corners of the land. Thus saith the Lord GoD, An evil, an only evil, behold, is come. An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains. what is that proverb that ye have Ezek. xii, 22-28. Son of man, in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision falleth? Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord GoD, I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision. For there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel. For I am the LORD: I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord Gov. Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the say unto them, Thus saith the times that are far off. Therefore Lord God. There shall none of but the word which I have my words be prolonged any more; spoken shall be done, saith the Lord GOD. Ezek. xxxiii, 33. And when this of them, and speak that which is cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) good. And Micaiah said, As the cerned him that he was of the then shall they know that a proLORD liveth, what the LORD saith prophets. And he said unto him, phet hath been among them. unto me, that will I speak. 1 Chron. xvii, 15. According to all these words, and according to Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life his reign, I Daniel understood by Dan. ix, 2. In the first year of books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet. that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. Hab. ii, 3, 4. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. Matth. xiii, 16, 17. But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; aud to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. Acts xi, 27--30. And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of ClandinsCesar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea: Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabus and Saul. Acts xxi, 4, 10, 11. And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem. And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, be took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun. 1 Kings ii, 27. So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh. 1 Kings xiii, 1, 2. And, behold. there came a man of God ont of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar! thus saith the LORD, Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. 1 Kings xv, 29. 30. And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam auy that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Abijah the Shilonite: Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger. 1 Kings xvi, 12, 13. Thus did Zimri destroy' all the house of Bausha, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake against Baasha by Jehu the prophet; For all the sins of Baasha, and the -ins of Elah his son, by which they sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin,inprovoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their vanities. 1 Kings xxii, 37. 39. So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood, said, Behold, thou shalt see ft with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died. 2 Kings ix, 25, 26. Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain, Take up, and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father, the LORD laid this burden upon him; Surely I. have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the LORD; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith the LORD. Now therefore take and Cast him into the plat of ground, according to the word of the LORD. 2 Kings xiv, 25. He restored the coast of Israel, from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gathepher. 2 Kings xv, 12. This was the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu, saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation. And so it came to pass. 2 Kings xxiii, 16. And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and polluted it according to the word of the LORD, which the man o God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words. LESSONS. Josh. xxiii, 15. Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have de Rev. xxli, 6. And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he clare it I have showed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. They are created now, and not from the beginning, even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. LORD, Like as I have brought all Jer. xxxii, 42. For thus saith the this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the 5ood that I have promised them. Zech. 1, 6. But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said. Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us. 1 Peter i, 10--12. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us, they did minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. SPECIAL PROPHETIC PERIODS. Rev. xi, 2, 3. But the court which is without the temple leave ont. and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. Rev. xii, 6, 14. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place; where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. Rev. xiii, 5, 18. And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. Here is wisdom. Let him that number of the beast; for it is the hath understanding count the number of a mau; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. that there was never a son left him, save Jeboahaz, the youngest of his sons. Ps. lxxiv, 9. We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. Prov. xxix, 18. Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Jer. vi, 27. I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and try their way. Hosea vi, 5, 6. Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth. For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt-offerings. SCHOOLS OF THE PRO- Dan. vii, 25. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand, until a time and times, and the PROPHECY THE MEANS OF Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; dividing of time. Dan. viii, 13, 14. Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed, VI. KNOWLEDGE UNDER THE 1 Chron. xxi, 12-17. And there Dan. xii, 6, 7, 11-13. And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever, that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh the desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waitethi, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days. LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians: And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house, and his sons also, and his wives; so 2 Kings ii, 3-7. And the sons of the prophets that were at Beth-el unto him, Knowest thou that the came forth to Elisha, and said LORD will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.
