(t)" If," &c. It is reasonable that cach man should be judged according to the opportunities he has had: where much has been given, it is not inconsistent that much should be required.

(u)" That," &c. This is a strong instance of stating as the cause what was only a consequence. See ante 44. note on Matt. ii. 15. The passage, which is in Psalm xxxv. 19. had no allusion to our Saviour; it was merely a prayer of David that they might not triumph over him who "hated him without a cause." The Collect.

O LORD, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed. Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

(i) "For the hope," &c. This is the subject of his thanks in verse 3.

(k)" In all the world." In our Saviour's noted prophecy as to the destruction of Jerusalem, &c. Matt. xxiv. when he was asked what should be the sign of his coming, he stated, (among others), "This gospel of the kingdom shall be "preached in all the world, for a witness "unto all nations, and then shall the "end come." Matt. xxiv. 14. And accordingly the gospel was preached before the destruction of Jerusalem in Asia Minor, Greece, and Italy, as far north as Scythia, south as Ethiopia, east as l'arthia and India, and west as Spain and Britain. 2 Newt. on the Prophecies, 156. If this does not prove God's assistance to the cause, it shews the zeal of the apostles, and their conviction of the

dear fellow-servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; who also declared unto us your 8. love in the Spirit. truth of what they preached. Our Saviour's prophecy was delivered A. D. 33. This Epistle is supposed to have been written A. D. 59; and Jerusalem was destroyed A. D. 70.

(1) "The grace of God in truth," v.6. i. e. the doctrines of the gospel.

(o)" Patience," &c. This implies, that v.10. they either were exposed to persecution, trouble, &c. or were likely to be so.

(p) "John's," i. e. the Baptist's. v.18. They had been to ask him why his disciples did not fast. Our Saviour was sitting at meat at this time in St. Matthew's house; so that he had good means of knowing what he here states.

(r) "Put forth." According to Luke viii. 51. "he suffered no man to go in, save Peter and James, and "John, and the father and mother of "the maiden."

(s) "That land." He was at Capernaum, in Galilee, when he performed this miracle.

(t) Jeremiah lived about 600 years before our Saviour's time.

(u)" Behold," &c. This prophecy, to the end of verse 6. is again repeated in nearly the same words, Jer. xxxiii. 15. 16. "Behold, the days come saith the Lord, "that I will perform that good thing "which I have promised unto the house "of Israel, and to the house of Judah. "In those days, and at that time will I "cause the branch of righteousness to

These prophecies were de livered about the time of the commencement of the Babylonish captivity, when Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon took Jerusalem, and carried the Jews captive to Babylon. The object probably was, in this time of debasement and distress, to assure those who still looked up to God, that he had not forgotten his promise, and that he would assuredly bring it to pass.

(x)" Unto David." It was the set- vj tled understanding of the Jews that the Messiah was to be of the lineage of David; many of the persons who considered Jesus Christ as the Messiah, expressed that as their belief by calling him "the Son of David; "and when our Saviour put it to the Pharisees, Matt. xxii. 42. ante 205. "what think of "Christ, whose Son is he?" they at once answered, "the Son of David."
