CATALOGUE OF ORIENTAL COINS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM. VOL. V. LONDON: PRINTED BY ORDER OF THE TRUSTEES. LONGMANS & Co., PATERNOSTER ROW; B. M. PICKERING, PARIS: MM. C. ROLLIN & FEUARDENT, 4, PLACE Louvois. THE COINS OF THE MOORS OF AFRICA AND SPAIN: AND THE KINGS AND IMÁMS OF THE YEMEN : IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM. CLASSES XIVB. XXVII. BY STANLEY LANE POOLE. EDITED BY REGINALD STUART POOLE, CORRESPONDENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF FRANCE. LONDON: PRINTED BY ORDER OF THE TRUSTEES. EDITOR'S PREFACE. THE Fifth Volume of the Catalogue of Oriental Coins in the British Museum comprises the money of the NorthAfrican and Spanish Moors and of the various dynasties of kings and Imáms who ruled in Arabia Felix in Mohammadan times. Fraehn's classes, XIVв. and XXVII., correspond to apart of the contents of this volume, but his arrangement does not provide for all the series herein included. The metal of each specimen is stated, and its size in inches and tenths, in the same manner as in the preceding volumes. The weight of the examples in gold and silver is stated in English grains, except in the case of the modern issues of the Shereefs of Marocco, when only typical weights are given. Tables for converting grains into grammes, and inches into millimètres, as well as into the measures of Mionnet's scale, are given at the end of the volume (pp. 173-175). Typical specimens are figured in the seven plates, which are executed by the autotype mechanical process from casts in plaster. The work has been written by Mr. Stanley Lane Poole; and I have carefully revised it, comparing every coin with the corresponding description. REGINALD STUART POOLE. |
