THE NAVAL ANNUAL purposes to record yearly every information calculated to do honour, or to be of service, to that profession which is the right arm of England. Apart from its ALMANAC and OFFICIAL LISTS, which give to it the character of a Diurnal and useful Naval Directory "THE CHRONOLOGY," by recording the actions of the last war for which medals were granted, presents a complete epitome of the great naval deeds which marked that eventful period in Naval History. The chief feature, however, in this Annual, which, it is confidently believed, will recommend it specially to the consideration of the Service, is the Gazette particulars of the war, which it furnishes under the heads of "The Baltic Fleet," "The Black Sea Fleet," and "The White Sea Squadron," where the Gazetted NAVAL DESPATCHES of the past year will be found in full. Such a record as this to a naval man, whose advancement in his profession mainly depends upon the official notice which may have been taken of him in "The Gazette," will be valuable, inasmuch as he will always have at hand, in a convenient form, and at a trifling expense, that sort of information most needed when memorialising a Board of Admiralty either for promotion or employment A narrative is also given of the Arctic Expeditions sent in search of Sir John Franklin. The "SERVICES" which are given of the several Ships in the Fleets, by calling to the recollection of their officers and men the distinguished part taken by these vessels in our great naval actions, will tend to incite |
