the Prussian manuals, - if any such are used in the exercises referred to, the compiler of the "Child's First Book of Thought" has designed to do something to aid in calling out the powers of observation, comparison and reflection in the pupils of our Primary and other Schools, and among those children generally who shall make use of the work.

Its purpose is, to furnish the young mind with some of the necessary materials of thought; and in the hands of a teacher, or an elder brother or sister, to afford the means by question and answer in a variety of forms, to bring into exercise, the thinking and reflecting faculties of the young.

To some of the chapters are appended passages of Scripture, and reference to others, suitable to be read by the pupil or teacher at the close of the exercise to which they are attached.

When used by teachers it will be expected that they will enlarge upon the several topics, and multiply indefinitely the number of questions, as the work is designed to aid, but not by any means to supersede, their own labors. BOSTON, AUGUST, 1839.
