14 And 'Ephron answered Abrâhâm, saying unto him,

15 My lord, hearken unto me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.

16 And Abrâhâm hearkened unto 'Ephrôn; and Abrâhâm weighed to 'Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the Benê-'Hêth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.

17 So the field of 'Ephrôn, which was in Machpêlâh, which was before Mamrê, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the border thereof round about, were made sure

18 Unto Abrâhâm for a possession in the presence of the Benê-'Hêth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.

19 And after this, Abrâhâm buried Sârâh his wife in the cave of the field of Machpêlâh, before Mamrê.

20 And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abrâhâm for a possession of a buryingplace by the Benê-'Hêth.

XXV. 1 And Abrâhâm took another wife and her name was Qetûrâh.

2 And she bare him Zimrân, and Yoqshân, and Medân, and Midyân, and Yishbâq, and Shûâ'h.

3 And the sons of [Yoqshân] were the Asshûrîm, and the Letûshîm and the Leummîm.

4 And the sons of Midyân; 'Êphâh, and 'Êpher, and 'Hanôch, and Abîd'a, and Eldâ'â. All these were the

children of Qetûrâh.

5 And Abrâhâm gave all that he had to Yiçe'hâq.

6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abrâhâm had, Abrâhâm gave gifts; and he sent them away from Yiçe'hâq his son, while he yet lived, eastward, into the east country.

7 And these are the days of the years of Abrâhâm's life which he lived, an hundred three score and fifteen. years.

8 And Abrâhâm gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.

9 And Yiçe'hâq and Yishmâ'êl his sons buried him in the cave of Machpêlâh, in the field of 'Ephrôn the son of Ço'har the 'Hitty, which is before Mamrê,

10 The field which Abrâhâm purchased of the Benê'Hêth; there was Abrâhâm buried, and Sârâh his wife. 11 And it came to pass after the death of Abrâhâm, that Elôhîm blessed Yiçe'hâq his son.

VIII.

THE GENEALOGIES OF YISHMÂ'ÊL.

XXV. 12 Now these are the genealogies of Yishmâ'êl Abrâhâm's son, whom Hâgâr the Egyptian, Sârâh's handmaid, bare unto Abrâhâm.

13 And these are the names of the sons of Yishmâ'êl, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Yishmâ'êl, Nebâyôth, and Qêdâr, and Adbeêl, and Mibsâm,

14 And Mishmâ', and Dûmâh, and Massâ,

15 And 'Hadâd, and Têmâ, Yetûr, Nâphîsh, and Qêdmâh.

16 These are the sons of Yishmâ'êl, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments: twelve princes according to their nations.

17 And these are the years of the life of Yishmâ'êl, an hundred and thirty and seven years; and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.

THE GENEALOGIES OF YIÇE'HÂQ.

XXV. 19 These are the genealogies of Yiçe'hâq, Abrâhâm's son: Abrâhâm begat Yiçe'hâq:

20 And Yiçe'hâq was forty years old when he took Ribqâh, the daughter of Bethûêl the Aramy of PaddanArâm.

26 And Yiçe'hâq was threescore years old when she

bare them.

XXVI. 24 (Elôhîm) appeared unto him in that night, and said, I am the God of Abrâhâm thy father: fear

1 The verse of the Elohist stating the birth of the two sons of Yiçe'hâq has been omitted by the latest editor, who has substituted for it the more detailed account of the Jehovist. According to the usual mode of writing of the Elohist, he must have recorded the birth of the two brothers nearly in the mode which we have conjecturally restored.

not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abrâhâm's sake.

34 And when 'Êsâv was forty years old, he took to wife Yehudith the daughter of Beêry, the 'Hitty, and Bâsemath the daughter of Elôn the 'Hitty:

35 And they were a grief of mind unto Yiçe'hâq and to Ribqâh.

XXVII. 46 And Ribqâh said to Yiçe'hâq, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of 'Hêth: if Ya'aqôb take a wife of the daughters of 'Hêth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

XXVIII. 1 And Yiçe'hâq called Ya'aqôb, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Kenâ'an.

2 Arise, go to Paddan-Arâm, to the house of Bethûêl thy mother's father: and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Lâbân thy mother's brother.

3 And El-Shadday (God Almighty) bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a company of peoples;

4 And give thee the blessing of Abrâhâm, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land of thy sojournings, which Elôhim gave unto

Abrâhâm.

5 And Yiçe'hâq sent away Ya'aqôb: and he went to Paddan Arâm unto Lâbâr, son of Bethûêl the Aramy, the brother of Ribqâh, Ya'aqôb and 'Êsâv's mother.

6 Now 'Êsâv saw that Yiçe'hâq had blessed Ya'aqôb and sent him away to Paddan-Arâm, to take him a wife from thence; and that, as he blessed him, he gave him

a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Kenâ'an;

7 And that Ya'aqôb obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan-Arâm :

8 And 'Êsâv saw that the daughters of Kenâ'an pleased not Yiçe'hâq his father;

9 And 'Êsâv went unto Yishmâ'êl, and took unto the wives which he had Ma'halath the daughter of Yishmâ'êl, Abrâhâm's son, the sister of Nebâyôth, to be his wife.

XXXI. 17 Then Ya'aqôb rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels:

18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his substance which he had gathered, the cattle of his getting, which he had gathered in Paddan-Arâm, for to go to Yiçe'hâq his father unto the land of Kenâ'an.

XXXIII. 18 And Ya'aqôb came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Kenâ'an, when he came from Paddan-Arâm; and encamped before the city.

XXXIV. 1 And Dinâh, the daughter of Lêâh, which she bare unto Ya'aqôb, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2 And Shechem, the son of 'Hamôr the 'Hivvy, the prince of the land, saw her, and he took her.

4 And Shechem spake unto his father 'Hamôr, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

1 The Elohist must have briefly narrated here Ya'aqôb's abiding with Lâbân and his marriage with Lâbân's two daughters. But his narrative, which was evidently a very concise one, has been set aside by the latest editor, who has put in its place the more developed narrative of the Jehovist, who has himself reproduced in its entirety an older document from the work sometimes called that of the second Elohist.'
