How hast thou made a breach (pâraçta)? And she called his name Pâreç.

30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand and his name was called Zâra'h.

XXXVIII.

YOSEPH IN POTIPHAR'S HOUSE.

XXXIX. 1 And Yôsêph was brought down to Miçrâîm, and Pôtiphar, an eunuch of Para'ôh's, the chief of the executioners, a Miçry (an Egyptian), bought him of the hand of the Yishma'êlîm, which had brought him down thither.

2 And Yahveh was with Yôsêph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Micry.

3 And his master saw that Yahveh was with him, and that Yahveh made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

4 And Yôsêph found grace in his sight, and he ministered unto him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

5 And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Yahveh blessed the Miçry's house for Yôsêph's sake; and the blessing of Yahveh was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field.

6 And he left all that he had in Yôsêph's hand; and

he knew not ought that was with him, save the bread which he did eat. And Yôsêph was comely, and well favoured.

7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Yôsêph; and she said, Lie with me.

8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand;

9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against Elôhim?

10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Yôsêph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

11 And it came to pass about this time, that he went into the house to do his work; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an 'Êbry unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and got him out.

16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.

17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The 'Êbry slave which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:

18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled out.

19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

20 And Yôsêph's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were bound and he was there in the prison.

21 But Yahveh was with Yôsêph, and showed kindness unto him, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Yôsêph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand, because Yahveh was with him, and that which he did, Yahveh made it to prosper

XXXIX.

YOSEPH IS ADVANCED IN MIÇRÂÎM.1

XLI. 49 And Yôsêph laid up corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.

*[And unto Yôsêph were born two sons before the year of famine came.]

51 And Yôsêph called the name of the firstborn Menassheh For, said he, Elôhîm 2 hath made me forget (nasshany) all my toil, and all my father's house.

52 And the name of the second called he Ephrâîm : For Elôhim hath made me fruitful (hiphrany) in the land of my affliction.

1 The latest editor of Genesis has here adopted the text of the Elohist exclusively. The result is that the account of this portion of Yôsêph's life by the Jehovist is hopelessly lost. Only three verses, which have been introduced in the final revision by way of explanatory supplements into the narrative of the Elohist appear to have been preserved. But the way they have been inserted enables us to know them by their unquestionable characteristics.

2 Here the Jehovist had borrowed from the editing of the older work to which the more or less correct name of the 'second Elohist' has been given, unless-which is not quite certain-these two verses, 51 and 52, have appeared in his own work, and the latest reviser did not take them directly from their original source.

XLII. 5 And the sons of Yisrâêl came to buy among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Kenâ'an.

27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the lodging place, he espied his money; and, behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, What is this that Elôhîm hath done unto us?

The last two of these verses, while quite distinct from the rest of the chapter into which they have been inserted, do not show traces of the mode of narrating of the Jehovist himself, but of that of the older work from which he has borrowed so much.
