Yardên,' and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Kena'any, saw the mourning at Gôren-hââtâd they said, This is a grievous mourning for Miçrâîm: wherefore the name of it was called Âbêl-Miçrâîm, which is beyond the Yardên.

2

12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them :

13 For his sons carried him into the land of Kenâ'an, and buried him in the cave of Machpêlâh, which Abrâhâm brought with the field, for a possession of a buryingplace, of 'Ephron the 'Hitty, before Mamrê.

14 And Yôsêph returned into Miçrâîm, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

15 And when Yôsêph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, It may be that Yôsêph will hate us, and will fully requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

16 And they sent a message unto Yôsêph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

17 So shall ye say unto Yôsêph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for that they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father. And Yôsêph wept when they spake unto him.

18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy slaves.

19 And Yôsêph said unto them, Fear not, for am I in the place of Elôhîm ?

20 And as for you, ye meant evil against me; but Elôhîm meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

1 Hebron being between Egypt and the Yardên, it is impossible to understand why they should have carried the body beyond the Yardên. The account of the Elohist is perfectly intelligible.

2 The mourning of Egypt.

21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake to their

heart.

22 And Yôsêph dwelt in Miçrâîm, he and his father's house and Yôsêph lived an hundred and ten years.

23 And Yôsêph saw Ephrâîm's children of the third generation the children also of Mâchîr the son of Menassheh were born upon Yôsêph's knees.

24 And Yôsêph said unto his brethren, I die: but Elôhîm will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abrâhâm, to Yiçe'hâq, and to Ya'aqôb.

25 And Yôsêph took an oath of the children of Yisrâêl, saying, Elôhîm will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my

bones from hence.

26 So Yôsêph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put into a coffin in Micrâîm.
