things work together for our good;" that "neither death, nor life.....nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." And who shall describe the glories of this inheritance in the world to come; of the state in which there is no fear, nor doubt, nor temptation, nor sin, nor sorrow, nor death, nor disease; where every inducement is to do right; where all the faculties, naturally, and of necessity, conspire for the promotion of purity and happiness; where the evils of life are unknown, and its best gifts exchanged for infinitely better-faith for sight, hope for joy, imperfect glimpses of God for the full vision of his glory and love; where our life shall be the life of angels, and our happiness the hap

piness of God! How shall we escape if we neglect this great salvation?

O thou Father of mercy, open our eyes to discern and appreciate the blessings bought for us by the blood of thy Son! May" salvation" be the object and business of our lives; and the desire of it, the one master passion of our souls!-Lord Jesus, thou couldst not save thyself, because thou hadst resolved to save others. O teach us humbly, and dutifully, and affectionately, to serve Thee here, till we see Thee face to face, and share in the holiness, and in the unmixed and undisturbed happiness of thy kingdom!

"HE saved others," scorners cried,
As they beheld The Crucified'-
"Is this the Son of God with power?
"Lo, in his own afflictive hour,

"Himself He cannot save."

He was the Son of God with power;
He "came unto that very hour;
I'll joy in his reproach and shame :
"He saved others," I'll exclaim-

"Himself he could not save."

His agony and bloody sweat,
His cross and passion, paid their debt:
He saved others when he fell;
Yet-who the mystery can tell?-
Himself he could not save!

Love, love unthroned the Son of God;
Love bruised him with the Father's rod;
Love gave,
and love reclaim'd His breath;
Stronger in Him was love than death-
Himself he could not save.

Were love and Deity at strife?
No-freely he resigned his life;
God freely sent him from above-
Love is of God, for God is love-
Himself he could not save.

Have I a hope beyond the grave,
'Tis this, Himself He could not save
Hope full of immortality!-
He saved others, saved me!

Himself he could not save.

CHAP. XVI. VER. 7.

But go your way, tell his disciples, and Peter, that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

BUT why should the glad tidings of the resurrection of Christ, and of his intended meeting with his disciples in Galilee, be conveyed especially to Peter? Is it not enough that this Apostle should receive the intelligence in common with his brother Apostles ? All had been guilty; but Peter especially guilty. All had "forsaken" their Master; but Peter had denied him with an oath. Shall the peculiar privilege be granted to the greatest offender? Yes; if that greatest offender be, at the same time, the deepest penitent. The question with

the great Father of a guilty world is, not, what has been the state of his creatures; but, what it is now? Do they now mourn over sin? Do they now call aloud for mercy? Do they now plead for pardon through the blood of a crucified Saviour? And, if Peter had sinned deeply, we know that he had also "wept bitterly." It is possible, also, that this peculiar grace was accorded to Peter, as "the Apostle of the circumcision" - the individual called to the peculiar and hazardous office of proclaiming the Gospel to his rebellious and furious countrymen. Such an enterprize required a mind peculiarly armed for the conflict. And what more likely to strengthen the Apostle for his undertaking, than the deep sense thus conveyed to his soul of the forbearance and love of the Master he served?
