4 One thing have I asked of JEHOVAH-this I earnestly seek— To dwell in the house of JEHOVAH all the days of my life, That I may gaze upon the beauty of JEHOVAH,

And contemplate His temple.

5 Truly in the day of calamity He concealeth me in His pavilion, HE hideth me in the secret recess of His tent,

HE placeth me high upon a rock;

And now is my head exalted above my surrounding enemies; Therefore will I offer in His tabernacle sacrifices of triumph, I will sing and hymn unto JEHOVAH.

7 Hear my voice, O JEHOVAH, when I call,

Be gracious unto me and answer me.

8 To Thee (saying): "Seek ye My face,"

My heart answereth: "THY face, JEHOVAH, will I seek.” 9 Hide not Thy face from me,

Drive not away Thy servant in displeasure.

THOU hast been my help, cast me not away,

Nor forsake me, O God of my salvation.

10 Truly my father and my mother have forsaken me; But JEHOVAH receiveth me.

11 Teach Thou me, O JEHOVAн, Thy way, And lead me into the path of rectitude, Because of those who watch me.

12 Give me not up unto the lust of mine enemies, For there have arisen against me false witnesses, Who breathe forth violence.

13 I surely trust that I shall behold the goodness of JEHOVAH, In the land of the living.

14 Place thy hope upon JEHOVAH.
Be strong and let thy heart be firm,

And place thy hope upon JEHOVAH.

PSALM XXVIII.

1 UNTO Thee, JEHOVAH, do I call,
O my Rock, do not refuse to answer me;
Lest, whilst Thou dost refuse to answer me,
I become like those who descend into the pit.

2 Listen to my supplicating voice when I cry aloud unto Thee— When I lift up my hands towards Thy holy oracle.

3 Drag me not away with the wicked,

Even with the workers of iniquity,

Who speak friendly words to their fellows,
While evil is in their hearts.

4 Render unto them according to their works,

And according to the wickedness of their doings;

According to the deeds of their hands render Thou unto them, Return unto them their deserts.

5 Because they consider not the operations of JEHOVAH,

And the works of His hands;

Let Him overthrow them,

And let Him not build them up.

6 Blessed be JEHOVAH,

Because He hath listened to my supplicating voice. 7 JEHOVAH hath been my strength and my shield, In Him my heart hath trusted,

Therefore have I been holpen, and my heart exulteth,
And with my song do I praise Him.

8 JEHOVAH is his strength and support;

HE is the salvation of His anointed.

9 Save Thou Thy people and bless Thine inheritance; Be their shepherd and uphold them for ever.

PSALM XXIX.

1 ASCRIBE unto JEHOVAH, ye sons of the mightyAscribe unto JEHOVAH glory and might.

2 Ascribe unto JEHOVAH the glory due unto His Name, Bow down yourselves unto JEHOVAH in holy ornaments.

3 The voice of JEHOVAH is above the waters;

4

The glorious God thundereth.

JEHOVAH is above the mighty waters.

The voice of JEHOVAH is full of power;

The voice of JEHOVAH is full of majesty;

5 The voice of JEHOVAH breaketh the cedars,

Yea, JEHOVAH breaketh in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 HE maketh them to leap like calves

Lebanon and Sirion like the young gazelle.

heavens or the rains. Torrents of rain
usually follow the shock of thunder-
clouds. Jeremiah (x. 13.) describes the
voice of God (the thunder) as calling
for the rains. So in Ps. cxxxv. 7. the
lightnings and rain are mentioned to-
gether. Again, "Canst thou lift up thy
voice to the clouds, that abundance of
waters may cover thee?" Job xxxviii. 34.
3 Jehovah is above &c." It is he that
buildeth his stories in the heaven."
Amos ix. 6. See also Ps. civ. 3.

6 Sirion -i. e. mount Hermon "which
the Sidonians call Sirion." Deut. iii. 9.
-gazelle or antelope.

7 The voice of JEHOVAH riveth asunder with flashes of fire. 8 The voice of JEHOVAH maketh the desert tremble as in pangs, JEHOVAH maketh the desert of Kadesh tremble as in pangs. 9 The voice of JEHOVAH maketh the hinds tremble as in labour, And strippeth the forests,

10 And, throughout His dwelling place, it proclaimeth His glory. JEHOVAH sitteth enthroned above the rain-torrent,

Yea, JEHOVAH sitteth enthroned a King for ever.

11 May JEHOVAH give strength unto His people! May JEHOVAH bless His people with prosperity!

PSALM XXX.

1 I EXTOL Thee, O JEHOVAH, because Thou hast raised me up, And hast not suffered mine enemies to exult.

2 JEHOVAH, my God!

I cried aloud unto Thee, and Thou hast healed me!

3 O JEHOVAH, Thou hast lifted me up from the grave! THOU hast saved me alive, so that I descended not into the pit! 4 Hymn unto JEHOVAH, уe His pious worshippers, And give praise unto His holy name.

PSALM XXX.

4 pious worshippers-This is a title given to the Israelites, distinguishing them from the idolatrous nations which surrounded them.

-name- Heb. memorial. "The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations." Exod. iii. 15. "O Lord, the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee." Isai. xxvi. 8. See Ps. cxxxv. 13.

Truly He is angry but for a moment,

In His favour is life.

In the evening affliction may take up her abode,
But in the morning cometh joy.

6 As for me, I thought in my prosperity:

I shall never be moved.

7 Through Thy favour, O JEHOVAH,

THOU causedst me to stand firm upon my strong mountain. THOU didst hide Thy face;

I was confounded.

8 Unto Thee, O JEHOVAH, did I call,

9

Even unto JEHOVAH did I make my supplication :

What profit is there in my blood?

In my going down into the pit?

Can dust praise Thee?

Can it proclaim Thy faithfulness?

10 Hear, O JEHOVAH, and be gracious unto me,

O JEHOVAH, be Thou my helper.

THOU hast turned my mourning into dancing,
THOU hast loosed from off me my sackcloth,
And hast girded me with joy;

12 Therefore heartily will I hymn Thee, and will not be silent, O JEHOVAH, my God, for ever will I praise Thee.

5 life i. e. safety and happiness. See ver. 7.

1

- abode―i. e. with the pious worshippers mentioned in ver. 4.

7 Thou didst hide &c.— i. e. No sooner didst Thou withdraw from me Thy support and favour, than all my prosperity vanished.

9 This and the tenth verse contain the Psalmist's earnest expostulation and prayer.

9 in my blood-i. e. in the taking of my life.

11 Thou hast turned &c.- The Psalmist, convinced as it seems that his supplication had been heard, now pours forth his praises and thanksgiving to God. See Ps. iv. 7. Note 1.

12 heartily will I hymn &c.— Heb. will my glory (i. e. my mind) hymn Thee and will not &c.
