20 "Behold! HE smote the rock,

"And the waters gushed out,

"And the streams flowed copiously; "Can He also give food?

[ocr errors]

"Can He provide flesh for His people? 21 Then JEHOVAH heard, and He was angry, And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And wrath went up against Israel;

22 Because they trusted not in God,

And did not place their confidence in His salvation.

23 Therefore He gave commandment unto the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven;

24 And He rained upon them manna for food, He gave unto them bread from the heavens. 25 Every one did eat the bread of princes,

He sent forth for them ample provision.

26 HE set in motion a strong wind in the heavens, And, by His power, He brought the south wind; 27 HE rained also upon them flesh, as dust―

Even winged birds, as the sand of the sea.

28 HE caused these to fall in the midst of their encampment, Round about their habitations.

29 So they ate, and were fully satisfied,

30

For He brought unto them the object of their desire.

They had not departed from the object of their desire— The meat was yet in their mouths

31 When the wrath of God went up against them— When He slew the goodliest of them,

And brought low the choice youths of Israel.

32 For all this, they sinned yet again,

Neither did they believe in Him, through His wonderful works.

33 Therefore He consumed their days in vanity,

And their years in anxious disquietude.

34 If He slew them, then they sought Him, And turned earnestly unto God;

35 And remembered that God was their rockThat the most high God was their redeemer. 36 But they flattered Him with their mouths,

And with their tongues they lied unto Him. 37 For their heart was not firm with Him, Nor were they faithful to His covenant.

38 Yet He was merciful;

HE forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not.
Many a time He turned away His anger,

And would not suffer all His fury to arise.

39 For He remembered that they were but fleshEven a breath which goeth forth, and returneth not! 40 How greatly did they provoke Him in the desert! How greatly did they anger Him in the wilderness! 41 Again and again they tempted God,

And grieved the Holy One of Israel.

42 They called not to mind His hand—

The day, when He delivered them from the enemy— 43 When He wrought His signs in Egypt— Even His wonders in the field of Zoan

44 When He changed their rivers into blood, That they could not drink of their streams

45 When He sent against them the fly, which devoured their land,

And frogs, which infested them

46 When He gave their fruits unto the caterpillar,

And the produce of their toil unto the locust47 When He destroyed their vines with hail,

Their fig-trees also with great hailstones

48 When He gave up their cattle to the hailstorm,

And their herds unto the lightnings

49 When He sent forth against them the heat of His anger, Wrath and indignation and trouble

A mission of evil messengers!

50 When He made a path for His indignation—
When He spared not their persons from death,
But gave up their lives unto the pestilence-
51 When He smote every first-born in Egypt,

The prime of their strength in the dwellings of Ham; 52 But caused His own people to go forth, like sheep, And conducted them through the desert, like a flock. 53 He led them in safety, and without fear;

But the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54 HE brought them within His holy boundaryUnto the mountain which His right hand purchased.

55 HE drove out the heathen before them,

And allotted their lands, by line, for an inheritance;
Yea He caused the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most High God, And kept not His revealed word.

57 They turned back and dealt unfaithfully, like their fathers; They resembled a deceitful bow.

58 They angered Him with their high places,

And moved His jealousy by their graven images.

59 God heard this, and He was angry,

And greatly abhorred Israel.

60 Therefore He forsook His dwelling-place in Shiloh-
The tabernacle in which He dwelt amongst men;
61 Yea, He surrendered His power into captivity,
And His splendour into the hands of the enemy.
62 HE gave up His people unto the sword,
Yea, He was angry with His inheritance.
63 Fire devoured His young warriors,

And His maidens were not praised in bridal song. 64 HIS priests fell by the sword,

And there remained no widows to make lamentation.

65 Again the Lord awaked, as one who sleepeth,
He became as a mighty man, excited by wine.
66 HE smote His enemies upon the back,
He fixed upon them perpetual disgrace.

terms descriptive of the ark of God. "And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband. And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken." 1 Sam. iv. 21, 22. See also Ps. cxxxii. 8.

63 His young warriors-Heb. His chosen. were not praised &c.. i. e. remained unmarried.

67 Moreover, He rejected the tent of Joseph,

And chose not the tribe of Ephraim;

68 But chose the tribe of Judah—

Even mount Sion, which He loveth,

69 And built His sanctuary, like the heavens—

Like the earth, which He hath founded to endure for ever.

70 HE chose also David, His servant,

And took him from the sheep-folds;

71 From following the milch-ewes, He brought him To feed Jacob, His people,

And Israel, His inheritance.

72 And he did feed them with integrity of heart, Yea, he guided them with a skilful hand.

PSALM LXXIX.

1 O GOD, the gentiles are come into Thine inheritance; They have defiled Thy holy temple,

They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins!

2 They have given the dead bodies of Thy servants,

To be meat for the birds of heaven

The flesh of Thy pious worshippers,

As food for the wild beasts of the earth!

3 They have poured out their blood, like water, On all sides of Jerusalem;

And there is no one to bury them!
