5 Yet Thou hast made him but a little lower than God, And Thou hast crowned him with majesty and honour !

6 THOU hast given him dominion over the works of Thy hands, THOU hast put all things under his feet!

7 All sheep and oxen;

And, moreover, the beasts of the field,

8 The birds of the air and the fishes of the sea

Every creature which traverseth the paths of the ocean!

9 O JEHOVAH, our Lord,

How glorious is Thy name throughout the earth!

PSALM IX.

I WILL praise JEHOVAH with my whole heart,
I will recount all Thy marvellous deeds.

2 I will rejoice and exult in Thee,

I will hymn Thy name, O most High,

3 Because mine enemies are turned back

Because they stumble and perish before Thee.

4 For Thou hast decided in favour of my rightful cause, THOU hast sat upon Thy throne, judging righteously.

5 THOU hast rebuked the nations,

THOU hast destroyed the wicked,

Their name hast Thou blotted out for ever and ever.

5 than God-This expression refers solely to man's sovereignty over the animal creation. The Psalmist has here obviously paraphrased Gen. i. 26. "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over &c."

The author of the Epistle to the

Hebrews, following the Septuagint version, reads "than the angels," and applies the passage to the temporary humiliation of Messiah.

7 beasts of the field-i. e. wild beasts.

3 before Thee

PSALM IX.

Heb. from Thy face.

6 The enemy are come to an end!

An eternal desolation!

And their cities hast Thou uprooted, The very memory of them hath perished! 7 But JEHOVAH sitteth enthroned for ever, Firmly establishing his seat for judgment; 8 HE judgeth the world with righteousness,

HE decideth the cause of the people with perfect rectitude. 9 JEHOVAH is a lofty tower of refuge for the poorA lofty tower of refuge in seasons of distress.

10 They who acknowledge Thy name put their trust in Thee; For Thou hast not deserted those who seek Thee, JEHOVAH.

11 Hymn ye unto JEHOVAH who dwelleth in Sion,

Declare among the people His doings;

12 For when He searcheth into deeds of blood,

He remembereth the oppressed,

HE forgetteth not their distressful cry:

13 "Pity me, JEHOVAH,

"Look on mine oppression and save me from those who hate me, "O Thou who liftest me up from the gates of death;

14 "That I may recount all Thy praises,

"In the gates of the daughter of Sion"That I may rejoice in Thy salvation."

15 The nations are sunk into the pitfall which they made, In the net, which they spread secretly, is their own foot taken.

16 JEHOVAH is made known! He hath executed judgment! The wicked are ensnared in the work of their own hands.

17 The wicked are turned back and gone to the place of the dead! Even all the nations who forget God.

18 For the poor are not always forgotten,

The expectation of the oppressed faileth not for ever: 19 "Arise, JEHOVAH, let not feeble man prevail;

"Let the nations be judged in Thy presence.

“Lay upon them a dread, O Jehovah,
"Let the nations know that they are but men."

PSALM X.

1 WHEREFORE, O JEHOVAH, standest Thou afar off? Wherefore avertest Thou Thine eyes in the time of distress? 2 The wicked man in his pride is fiercely pursuing the poor, They are caught by the devices which he hath contrived. 3 For the wicked man glorieth

In having attained the desire of his heart;

He congratulateth himself upon his gains;
He holdeth JEHOVAH in contempt!

4 The wicked man, in the haughtiness of his spirit, (saith)
"HE will never enquire!"

All his thoughts are "There is not a God!"

5 His ways are tortuous at all times;

THY judgments, because Thou art on high, are not before him; As for all his enemies, he scorneth them.

6 He saith within himself:

"I shall not be moved through succeeding generations, “Because I am not subject to calamity."

7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and wrong, Under his tongue are mischief and iniquity.

8 He placeth himself in ambush near the inclosures,
In his hiding places he murdereth the innocent;
His eyes watch for the helpless.

9 He lieth in wait in his hiding place like a lion,
In his covert he lieth in wait, to prey upon the poor;
He preyeth upon the poor,

When he hath drawn them into his net.

10 He croucheth, he stoopeth down,

And the helpless fall into his toils.

11 He saith within himself: "God hath forgotten"-
"HE hath hidden His face". "HE will never see."

12 Arise, JEHOVAH! O God, lift up Thy hand, Forget not the poor.

13 Wherefore doth the wicked man hold God in contempt? Wherefore saith he within himself: "THOU wilt not enquire."

[blocks in formation]

14 THOU dost see, for Thou beholdest injury and oppression.

Giving himself into Thy hands,

The helpless leaveth his cause with Thee;

THOU art the helper of the orphan.

15 Break Thou the arm of the wicked man and crush him.

"Thou mayest search for the wicked, but thou shalt not find him."

16 JEHOVAH is King for ever and ever;

The gentiles have perished from His land.

17 THOU, O JEHOVAH, hast heard the desire of the meek, THOU Confirmest their heart, Thou inclinest Thine ear: 18 So as to give sentence for the orphan and the poor. Never again shall man drive them in terror from the land.

PSALM XI.

1 WITH JEHOVAH do I take refuge. Wherefore say ye unto me:

"Flee to the mountains like a bird.

[ocr errors]

2 For behold the wicked bend their bow,

"They string it, their arrow is upon the string, "To shoot in secret at the upright of heart. 3 "When the foundations are overturned, "What can the righteous man do?"
