No. 33.-GOVERNMENT LABOUR BUREAU.-Employment found for Persons of various Trades and Callings during the year ending 18th February, 1893. * In addition to the numbers here given, it is estimated that 1,850 have obtained employment indirectly through the Bureau, thereby making a total of 10,004. Labour Bureau.-The Government Labour Bureau was established on the 18th February, 1892. Persons requiring employment are registered at the Bureau without fee or charge, leaving the matter of wages to be arranged between the employer and employee. 18,600 persons, of whom 7,449 were married and 11,151 single, registered themselves during the year, and employment was obtained for 8,154. Prior to the 5th July free passes were issued by rail or steamer without guarantee, but since that date orders have been signed by the employees or employers for a refund of the cost of passes to be deducted from the first month's wages. The total amount signed for to the 20th February, 1893, was £2,476, of which £1,151 has been received, the bulk of the amount owing-£1,325-being not then due. In the Relieving Branch the Government distributed 30,960 rations, the average number of families in receipt of relief being 220. During the year the cost of the rations was £2,324, being at the rate of 1s. 6d. per ration. A ration consists of 3 lb. meat, 4 lb. bread, H. tea, and 41b. sugar.
