The History of CALEB the Son of JePHUNNEH.

THE study of Biography is one of the most pleasant and profitable in which the human mind can be employed. The lives, character and ac. tions of those who lived in former periods present us with innumerable lessons for the proper regulation of our own conduct, both as it respects our duty towards God, and our deportment in civil and religious society. In this respect, Scripture Biography demands the chief place in our regard : in all other histories the reader is obliged to encounter both the errors and the prejudices of the historian in his search after truth, and often when he imagines he has found an inestimable jewel, he is deceived by a mere pebble. Frequently those actions which are dignified with high sounding names, and are exhibited to the world as rare ex. amples of virtue or honour, courage or generosity, are in reality little else than splendid vices, the imitation of which would tarnish the reputation of an individual, and be productive of the most banefal and pernicious consequences to society.

But this can never be the case in respect to the histories contained in the inspired volume. They Vol, ix.
