SYNONYMES are words having precisely the same meaning. The number of words in any language, which are strictly synonymous, is small; but in the English language there are many instances in which words derived from different sources will convey precisely the same ide? In writing, a knowledg of these words is very useful, as it enables the writer to substitute a word for one already used without impairing the sense of the sentence. To the poet an acquaintance with the synonymous words of the language is essential.
