was born September 6, 1751, at Plainfield, Ct. He married (1) Miss Pierce, and (2) Eunice Hall. He was a farmer by occupation, and died in Jewett City, Griswold, Ct., in 1823, or 1828. Children born in Griswold:

87. JOSEPH HODGES CUTLER (Capt. William, Jonathan, Thomas, James1) was born April 14, 1755, in Killingly, Ct. He ran away in his youth, and enlisted in the Revolutionary army. He served through the war, was promoted to Captain, was wounded, and received a pension for life. He married (1) Miss Lockwood, a Quakeress, at White Plains, N. Y., and settled as a merchant and farmer at Tarrytown, where he lived high. He lost his wife, and married (2) Miss Cady, in New York. He lost all his property, and afterwards became a custom-house officer, which position he held until his death, in 1837. His sons-in-law say that there is not one of the descendants of this family living. Children :

iii. Clara, m. a fur merchant, in New York.

iv. Susan, m. Rev. J. C. Jacobia, who was a Pole by birth, a

Jew by descent, a Christian by profession, and chaplain. in the U. S. army. He m. (2) Mary, dau. of Simeon Cutler and a cousin of his first wife; he d. at a hospital in New York. She resides with her brother Henry in Central Village, Ct.

88. JONATHAN CUTLER (Capt. William, Jonathan, Thomas2 James1) was born at Plainfield, Ct., January 24, 1762, where

in early life he worked at his trade of clothier and fuller, with his father. He settled, as a farmer, in Killingly, where he married Keziah, daughter of Silas Hutchins, November 8, 1786. She died January 18, 1828, aged sixty-three. He was of a fine personal appearance, had a cheerful and social disposition, entertained much company, and, in his latter years, united and walked with the church, He died September 11, 1837, aged seventy-five. Children:

89. SIMON CUTLER (Capt. William, Jonathan,3 Thomas, James1) was born September 6, 1766, at Plainfield, Ct., and inherited the homestead on which he lived. He was a farmer by occupation. He married, December 17, 1797, Betsey Herrick, distinguished for piety and energy, who died August 5, 1821, aged fifty-one. He died June 1, 1843, having lived his entire life in the house in which he was born. Children born in Plainfield:

i. Andrew, A. M., b. Feb. 8, 1799; prepared for college at an Academy near his father's, in Plainfield, Ct.; graduated in 1823, at Hamilton College, with fair claims to genius and scholarship and with the prospects which they afford. But a sad change came over him. He contracted a sudden cold, which was followed by a severe sickness and the partial but permanent disability of his left hand and right leg. Yet, nearly helpless as

he was, he determined that his life should not be a blank. He opened a private school in Plainfield and taught in the neighboring towns, and, after the death of his father, he took possession of the ancient Cutler homestead, and for 8 years longer received scholars. During this time, Mr. Cutler studied, and introduced. improvements in school books and methods of instruction, encountering much opposition, which he successfully resisted; he also prepared a "Treatise on Moral Philosophy." He d. unm., June 26, 1876, a. 77, in Central Village, Ct.

ix. Henry S., b. Feb., 1818, at Plainfield, Ct. 90. William B. Cutler (Benjamin, Benjamin, Thomas, James1), a farmer, was born January 9, 1772, and settled in Rockingham, in 1793, in that part of the town afterwards incorporated as Westminster, Vt. Here he married, February 9, 1800, Polly Beckwith, who was born June 6, 1782, and here they both died, at a good old age. Mr. Cutler embraced the faith of the Orthodox church, and for several years contributed to its support, but from this he gradually withdrew, finally severing his connec

tion altogether. From the old town records we copy the following: "Rockingham, Vt., May 4, 1806. I, the subscriber, do not agree in religious opinions with a majority of the inhabitants of said town of Rockingham. (Signed.) William B. Cutler." Children born at Westminster, Vt.:

D., (Dr. Nathan, Benjamin, Thomas, James1) was born in 1765, probably in Dunstable (now Nashua), N. II., and was a student at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., in 1785. He resided in Bedford, N. H., and, in 1789, he was the only practicing physician in the town, and continued without a rival until a short time before his death, which occurred May 31, 1809. He married, about 1790, Elizabeth, daughter of Moses Swett of Bedford, N. II.; she died April 3, 1836, aged sixty-four. Children:
