up his long cherished hope of an education, and devote his time to clearing up the land, and securing the comforts so hard to obtain in a new forest home. In 1858 he was for one year a student at Albion Seminary, Mich., teaching school the two following winters. When twenty years of age he received from his father a deed of forty acres of land, for his faithfulness, and to this he soon added forty more. In 1862 he enlisted in the 3d Mich, infantry, served nearly through the war, and was engaged in the battles of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1802, Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863, Locust Grove and Mine Run, November 25, 1863, after which he was on detached duty at Gen. Birney's headquarters until May, 1864. He also participated in the following battles: Wilderness, May 5-6, 1864; Spottsylvania, May 12, 1864, Cold Harbor, June 4-5-6, 1864; North Anna, and was shot through near the heart, in a charge on the enemy's works in front of Petersburgh, Va. This disabled him from further service, and he was honorably discharged from the service. Mr. Cutler was married in 1861, to Harriet Elizabeth, daughter of Calvin Church of Geneseo, N. Y., and was residing on his farm at the time of his enlistment, to which he returned in the spring of 1875, adding thereto until his cultivated land consists of over three hundred acres. In politics he voted with the Republican party, until the coming of the third "Prohibition" party, of which he is an ardent supporter, and is sanguine in his belief that the overthrow of the liquor traffic is to be accomplished only through that party. The family of Mr. Cutler are all members of the Methodist church, Mrs. Cutler having been a teacher in its Sabbath school for many years, and is also an active member in the W. C. T. U. Children:

There are said to have been several children all of whom remained with their mother during their minority. Benjamin, upon attaining his majority, received his share of his father's personal property, but is said to have been entitled to a share of an undivided estate located in the Province of Maine (?), and of which he never came into possession. In early manhood he became a sailor with headquarters at Providence, R. I., following the seas until about forty years of age, when he removed to New York State, settling near the mouth of the Mohawk river, where he married a Mrs. Coons. They resided here several years, until on account of the hostility of the Indians, they were obliged to seek a new home. About 1795 they removed to Virginia, thence to Ohio, while yet a territory.
