1. Robert Cutler, the emigrant, settled at Charlestown, Mass., some time prior to October 28, 1636. As in the cases of James of Watertown and John of Hingham, there is nothing which the compiler can find either in our own or in the trans-Atlantic records to establish his identity before his arrival in New England; neither is any reference made as to his calling in life. That he was a man of some prominence is indicated by his having held sundry important civil offices, while the records state that he was admitted to the church in 1637, and made a deacon in 1659. May 2, 1638, he took the freeman1s oath. October 28, following, the General Court ordered that "For Robert Cutler, in regard of his lameness, charge and weak estate, by reason of his long sickness, the deacons of Charlestown were wished to see him and afford such help as is needful, and bring in their bills, and the treasurer to pay the same." Subsequently, he seems to have been successful and to have accumulated a considerable property, as is evident by his ability to assist his son Nathaniel to a collegiate education, and by his leaving his family in comfortable circumstances. He died March 7, 1665. The day preceding, he made his will, distributing a good estate to his wife Rebecca, four children and several grand-children, besides making bequests to the deacons of the church. July 25, 1676, Mrs. Cutler made her will, bequeathing property inventoried at £685 18s to sons John and Nathaniel, daughter Rebecca Errington, son-in-law Matthew Griffin, grand-daughter Sarah Griffin, daughters-in-law Martha (the wife of her son John) and Elizabeth (the wife of her son Nathaniel); she made Nathaniel sole executor. She owned an old house in Charlestown, valued at £110, and a new house next the ferry, at £160, one cow's common, and wood and hay

lots, at £33. John had previously received lands, and Nathaniel had the homestead. There has been difficulty in tracing this line, as the author has been unable to connect any of the present generation with the few descendants of Robert Cutler here given. The family resided in Charlestown and Boston until about 1725 to 1735, after which no further records can be obtained.

[blocks in formation]

They had

ii. Hannah, m., Aug. 29, 1664, Matthew Griffin; d. Dec. 2,

1676.

iii. Rebecca, m. Abraham Errington of Cambridge, a son of Anna Errington, a widow, who came from Newcastle, upon Tyne; she d. March 18, 1678.

3. iv. Nathaniel, bapt. "8th day of the 11th month, 1640," at Charlestown, Mass.

2. John, Deacon and Captain, (Robert1) was born probably in

England, in 1628, and was a blacksmith of Charlestown, Mass. He married (1) Anna, daughter of Robert and Anna Woodmansey; she died August 30, 1683, aged fiftysix. He married (2), October 29, 1684, Mehitable daughter of Increase Nowell and widow of William Hilton; she died September 29, 1711, aged seventy-four, and disposing of her property: to her sister Mary Long her best hood; to Mrs. Simon Bradstreet a seal ring; to her maid, Elizabeth Lord, £5,and all the residue of her estate to her two sons, John and Richard Hilton. He, with wife Anna, was admitted to the church "the 27th day of the 9th month 1652," and he was chosen deacon February 25, 1672. He was ensign in the military company, promoted to the "leftenancy" in 1678, joined the artillery company in 1681, and, in 1680-2, represented Charlestown in the General Court.* Dea. Cutler made his will, August 20, *"Capt. Cutler was engaged during King Phillip's War, on various occasions, in conducting supply trains to the garrisons, and at the time of Capt. Wadsworth's destruction at Sudbury, April 21, 1676, narrowly escaped being cut off with his company returning from Marlborough. He was in command of a company under Capt. Henchman the next month at Hassanamesit." (N. E. Genealogical Reg., July, 1888.)
