CUTLER & CO.

The establishing of the widely known and prosperous New

England house of Cutler & Co., wholesale grain dealers and millers, with head-quarters now at North Wilbraham, Mass., may be properly considered to have been done by Hon. Elihu Cutler, of Holliston, Mass., nearly a century ago. His son, Simeon Newton Cutler, succeded him, and, in 1844, organized the firm of S. N. Cutler and Son at Cutler's Mills, Ashland, the associated partner being Mr. Henry Cutler, senior member of the present firm. Henceforth the rapidly increasing business bears testimony to their energy and excellent business capabilities. They soon secured for themselves unusual facilities by the introduction of a grain elevator, the first one built east of the Hudson river. In 1856 they opened a mill at Milford and eight years later admitted to partnership Mr. Thompson, Mr. S. N. Cutler's son-inlaw, changing the name of the firm to S. N. Cutler & Co. This company existed until the death of the senior member of the firm in 1867, when Messrs. George E. and Charles F. Cutler succeeded their father and for the ensuing ten years the three brothers and their brother-in-law comprised the firm. In the meantime another mill was erected at South Framingham and purchasing houses established at Chicago and Peoria, I11. The latter were kept until 1887. In 1877 that portion of the business located at Ashland was removed to North Wilbraham, the Ashland mill privileges having been sold to the Boston Water Works. At this time Mr. Henry Cutler's son E. Herbert Cutler, was admitted to a co-partnership and six years later his son-in-law, Mr. Perry. In 1879 the firm took its present name, Cutler & Co., and in 1887 was reorganized with the following members: Messrs. Henry, George E. and H. Willis Cutler, B. T. Thompson and J. M. Perry. In the present partners, as well as in those of the antecedent generation, may be found true types of New England industry and enterprise and they may well view with pride and pleasure a business career of such pronounced success. Of the individual members of this firm:

He has also been an active member of the Board of Trustees of Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Col., since its first establishment in 1874.
