is now Chairman of the "School Board," in both of which positions his liberal judgment and advanced ideas assert their influence. He has been President of the Contoocook Savings Bank since its organization and for several years a director in the Monadnock National Bank at East Jaffrey, while the Peterboro Improvement and Monadnock Railroad companies honor him as their Treasurer, He attends the Congregational church, but possesses liberal views, is a member of Altemont Lodge F. and A. M., an officer in R. A. Chapter, comrade (surgeon) in Aaron F. Miller Post, No. 6, G. A. R., an active member of the New Hampshire Medical and a Fellow of the Webster Historical Societies. "Professionally as well as in business transactions, Dr. Cutler is an independent actor, never hesitating to assume any legitimate responsibility which may result in good." He married, June 6, 1865, at Dale, U. S. General Hospital, Martha Louise, daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Shedd) Ryan* of Jaffrey. Children:

i. Samuel Ryan, b. April 29, 1866; now a senior in Dartmouth Col., 1888.

ii. Charles Henry, b. Sept. 9, 1867; a graduate from Peterboro High School and now attending Cushing Academy at Ashburnham, Mass.

iii. Castella Melinda, b. Nov. 21, 1869; grad. from the Peterboro High School, now at Cushing Academy at Ashburnham.

iv. Martha Evangeline, b. Oct. 20, 1875.

v. Annie Louise, b. Aug. 22, 1877.

*(Mrs. Cutler was born November 30, 1845, in Sharon, N. H., and is a de. scendant in the fourth generation from Daniel Ryan, M. D., who came from Ireland as surgeon on a vessel about 1750 and settled in Tewksbury, Mass. His son, Samuel Ryan, M. D., came to Sharon in 1790, and his son Samuel was a farmer, dealing in lumber and owner of the famous "Ryan Steam Mills." He was a leading man in the town, holding all its important offices. In 1854 he removed to Jaffrey, where he became a prominent citizen, holding the of fice of selectman for several years, and in 1863-4 representing the town in the Legislature. For many years prior to his death (which occurred May 5, 1876, at Minneapolis, Minn.) he was director in the Monadnock National Bank.)

448. Emerson B.8 Cutler (Amos B. Isaac, Thomas, David,4 Thomas, James, James1) was horn June 14, 1836, in Bedford, Mass. He married (1) Abbie F. Brown of Bedford, and (2) Catherine Heinck, August 7, 1860. He resides in Bedford, where his children were horn:

IRA CUTLER (Charles, Thomas, Thomas, David,4 Thomas, Junes, James1) was born August 27, 1817, and married Marcia M., daughter of Ebenezer Bartlett of Hancock, N. H., October 3, 1844. He was a stone mason and contractor, residing in Fitchburg, Mass., where he died January 29, 1872. Children:

453. LEONARD CUTLER (Thomas C., Thomas, Thomas, David,4 Thomas, James, James1) was horn Sept. 10, 1836, in Bedford, Mass. He married (1) Elvira Coburn of Natick, Mass., May 2, 1859. He married (2) January 1, 1872, Mrs. Cynthia Collins and (3) Susie Coleman, May 25, 1876. He was an architect and builder of Southbridge, Mass., many years, where he died in 1886. Children:

i. William W., m. Isabella, daughter of David and Isabella Gowan of Southbridge, Dec. 21, 1880. He is a woodworker, residing in Worcester, Mass.

ii. Hattie, resides in Southbridge, Mass.

iii. Jennie, m. Rev. Waldo Dudley of California.

454. GEORGE HENRY CUTLER, (Isaac,7 Nathaniel,6 Thomas,5 David, Thomas, James, James1) a carpenter, was born August 20, 1826. He married (1) January 1, 1849, Mary Ann Rice, who died January 6, 1851, aged thirty-four. He married (2) November 17, 1853, Lydia Ann Holbrook. He resides at Cambridge, Mass. Children:

i. CHARLES HENRY, b. Oct. 6, 1854.

ii. Mary Ella, b. Sept. 3, 1856.

iii. Ida Frances, b. July 31, 1858; d. about 1870.
