The set comprises 5 vols., 4to, and contains 132 steel plates (many of these being printed on India Paper), together with 42 woodcuts, battle-plans, etc., the greater part on Japan paper, inlaid in the text. The steel plates include portraits of a large number of the statesmen and generals of the Revolutionary times, which are not accessible in any other single work. Irving's "Life of Washington" was the crowning work of this great and characteristically American author, and one to which he had given many years of thought and of labour. The work is of first importance, not merely as presenting a lifelike and faithful picture of the man who has been accepted as the first citizen of the Republic," but on the ground of its admirably clear, comprehensive, and impartial narrative of the military operations of the Revolutionary war and of the founding of the Republic.
