BOOKS FOR TRAVELLERS ON THE CONTINENT.

Swan's Colloquial French for Travellers and Students. Idiomatic French Phrases with the exact pronunciation on a new system. 3rd edition, 16mo. 1891. 128 pp. Cloth. IS.

Halifax Courier.—Contains a large amount of information, well arranged and easy of reference, and travellers will find it a useful companion.

The Oracle, July 26, 1890.-A handy little book for acquiring the French pronunciation and ordinary colloquialisms. It gives as close an idea of the requisite sounds as is possible without hearing them, and contains a good deal of information to inexperienced travellers.

New York Herald, July 25, 1890.-A practical and convenient handbook for those unacquainted with, or having but an imperfect knowledge of French. Mr. Swan gives also some excellent hints to strangers upon French manners and customs.

Glasgow Herald, July 31st, 1890.—It contains a series of idiomatic French phrases, with the pronunciation represented on a new system based upon a scientific analysis of French sounds. There is a table of pronunciation, chapters of general advice, of special notes as to travel, &c., in France and Belgium, tables of weights, measures, and money, notes on hotels, railways, cabs, &c., and in fact a great amount of useful information.

Scotsman, July 28th, 1890.-A useful and well-compiled series of remarks, with not only the necessary translations, but the pronunciation of the phrases indicated upon an intelligible scheme.

These Pocket Conversation Dictionaries differ from all hitherto issued in this country. The Vocabulary has been most carefully selected, and comprises only words in actual use instead of being a mere compilation from previous dictionaries. Special attention has been paid to accurate distinction of the various meanings of the same word, and of their current technical uses. But the chief feature of the Dictionary is that the conversational and idiomatic phrases naturally connected with a word are grouped together under that word. Thus under the word" Railway" there are eight columns of carefully chosen phrases. All travellers on the Continent are urged to examine these Dictionaries.

D. NUTT, 270, 271, Strand.
