Commenced under their direction, and fostered by their genercsity; designed as a compilation of ancient annals in relation to this portion of the Mississippi Valley; intended to form the foundation of a truthful History of the State, to be collected and preserved from time to time, while passing events are fresh in the memories of contemporaries; professing to exhibit an accurate picture, at the present day, of a region of country whose beauty of scenery, fertility of soil, mineral wealth, facilities of commerce internal and external, and healthy climate, are unsurpassed in the Union, and whose rapid growih in population, and still increasing prosperity, have hitherto been unexampled in the history of our land; the compilation of the same being now published under legislative authority, it is most properly, and very respectfully,
