A preliminary release ADVANCE REPORT ON ENGINEERING DEGREES (1962-63) AND ENROLLMENTS (FALL 1963), OE-54004-63, was published in February 1964.

HIGHLIGHTS

DEGREES The number of bachelor's degrees conferred in engineering has declined for 4 consecutive years-from 38,100 in 1958-59, to 33,500 in 1962-63-a total decrease of 4,600, or 12 percent.

As expected, the number of advanced degrees conferred in engineering increased in 1962-63. At the master's level, 9,600 degrees were granted-an increase of 8 percent from the previous year and an increase of 115 percent since 1954-55, a period of only 8 years. At the doctor's level almost 1,400 degrees were conferred during 1962-63. This was 14 percent greater than the number of doctor's degrees reported the previous year and 130 percent greater than the number reported 8 years earlier.

(

During 1962-63, as in every year since 1957-58, more degrees were co electrical engineering at each level than in any other engineering field. Of all degrees conferred, electrical engineering constituted 31 percent of all bachelo 29 percent of all master's degrees, and 28 percent of all doctor's degrees. ENROLLMENTS-Freshman engineering enrollments in the fall of 1963 totale an increase of less than 2 percent. Although up for the first time in several y man engineering enrollments were still 13,100 (almost 17 percent) lower tha number reported in the fall of 1957.

Total undergraduate engineering enrollments in the fall of 1963 were 232 rounded figure was the same as for 1961 and was up less than 1 percent from th year. Prior to the fall of 1961, there was a 4-year decrease from a peak of the fall of 1957. The undergraduate enrollments this fall were still 37,000 or less than those of 6 years ago.

Enroll

Graduate enrollments in engineering attained new records in the fall of 196 ments at the master's level were 38,500-up almost 9 percent from the pr eding tal and over double the figure of 9 years earlier. Enrollments at the doctor's level were nearly 11,000-up 19 percent from the fall of 1962 and over 3 times the number reported
