NORTHUMBERLAND AND DURHAM.

IN the courfe of the last 12 months, 814 patients were discharged cured, and III relieved, from the charitable inftitution of Bamborough caftle, for the relief of fick and lame Poor. During the fame period, 51 pregnant Poor women have been alfo deliyered at their own houses, at the expence of that laudable intitution.

The Rev. Mr. Wallis has lately left the annual donation of one guinea, for the best crop of potatoes, the cl aneft fallow, &c. to claimants in a certain diftriét, in the vicinity of

Seaton.

Some gentlemen of Newcastle lately appeared on the flage of the theatre there, for the Jaudable purpofe of affifting the lying-in hofpital, and the charity for the relief of poor married women lying-in at their own houses; inftitutions which for fome time paft have been in a declining state.

The number of French emigrant clergy at Newcastle, &c. amounts to nearly 200 they are all of Normandy, and moftly of the diocefe of Coutances. Permanent lodgings for about 50 of the number have been provided, and a temporary fhelter has been alfo fitted up for the remainder.

At a late meeting of deputy lieutenants and magiftrates, &c. at Morpeth, a number of plans were fuggefted for raifing corps of volunteer infantry, cavalry, pioneers, &c. which were unanimously rejected. The propofal of a general county meeting, recommended by the lord lieutenant, was alfo negatived, left refolutions might be adopted, &c. hoftile to the minifter. The idea of invafion was treated by the meetiug as a groundless topic of alarm.

The lowlands and carrs, in a confiderable track of country, including the parishes of Beverley, Hutton-Cranfwick, Cottingham, Hull, Kirkella, &c. are about to be effectually drained, and improved.

In an aviary, at South Cave, are feven partridges, the plumage of four of which is of the molt beautiful milk-white, without a fingle brown feather; the remaining three are pied. They were taken lately in a net, and do not appear to fuffer from their confinement.

Seventeen veffels were employed last season from the port of Hull alone, in the Greenland whale fishery. The total aggregate of their cargoes amounted to 125 fith, and 12,640 feal's. This fuccefs is unprecedented.

Liverpool, Dec. 3.-A fingular circumstance occurred lately to a veffel just arrived here from the West Indies.-On the paffage the was ftruck by a fish, whofe horn or beak perforated the bottom, through a found three-inch oak plank-About five inches of this inftrument broke fhort off and lodged in a timber, which it fplit in fuch a manner, as to admit a confiderable quantity of water;-it was even found neceffary to keep one pump conftantly going till the veffel arrived at the nearest port, whither the was obliged to bear.

An artist, at Blackburn, has made proposals to the Board of Admiralty, to complete a machine or apparatus, for the purpofe of defcending into deep water, &c.-An experiment was lately made with this machine and its appendage, near Blackburn, when the artist defcended into a pit fome fathoms deep of water, and remained at the bottom upwards of an hour.-On his afcenfion, he brought up a aumber of articles which had been previously thrown into the pit for the purpose; he also maintained a converfation with fome confidential perfons, who accompanied him, during the time of his remaining in the pit.

The works on the canal from Burton to Prefton, by Lancafter, Gartting, &c. are pro ceeding with fuch rapidity, that it will be completed in the courfe of the enfuing fummer.

A new manufactory of pottery on a very extenfive establishment, and promifing confiderable advantage to the town, c. has been lately fet up in Liverpool.

DERBYSHIRE.

Lately were difcovered. in a garden, under ground, near Chesterfield, forty-two pistols and twelve fwords, with faddles, bridles, &c.; the fwords are remarkably large, and the pistol-barrels fourteen inches long. The make and fashion of thefe articles are evidently of the highest antiquity; they are however in a state much corroded and decayed.

STAFFORDSHIRE.

At a recent exhibition of wild beafts at Stafford, a young womon incautiously venturing too near them, a tyger caught hold of a child the had in her arms, and lacerated its face in a hor

rid manner; it was not without difficulty that

the child was extricated from his claws.

According to a recent regulation, a number of MARKET BOATS have been lately eftablished on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire -canal, for the purpofe of conveying goods, &c. o and from the warehoufes on its banks, and the adjoining parts of the country.

LEICESTERSHIRE.

The proprietors of the Leicestershire canal have, very juftly, announced their intentions to apply to parliament for authority to increase the Jonnage rates upon the navigation.

The corporation of Leicester have patriotically contributed the fum of zocol. towards afifiing government in raising the fupplies for the enfuing year. A very laudable example, which deferves general imitation.

The works on the Ashby de la Zouch canal are in a forward ftate, the most difficult parts of the undertaking, particularly the funnel at Snareftone, being already completed; when navigable, river boats of forty tons burthen may fail upon the fame.

In Lord Lyttleton's kitchen-garden, at Hagley, a number of potatoes were lately dug up, which weighed upwards of two pounds each. One of them, which measures two feet one inch in circumference, weighed five pounds fix ounces.

HEREFORDSHIRE.

The Hydrophobia having appeared lately among the hounds of Col. Rolleiton, n ar Rofcre, carried off twenty-two of the pack; the remainder were preferved by a table fpoonful of the juice of Ribwort, or Ribgrafs, administered to ach dog morning and evening, a quantity of it alfo being chopped in their food: though feveral of them had been infected, this remedy proved effectual to prevent or cure the disease.

A new county jail, on a liberal plan of accommodation, &c. is to be erected at Hereford. A number of falutary regulations (providing, as far as poffible, for the convenience and comfort of the prifoners) have been alfo adopted for its management, &c.

The Leominster canal is at length completely open, extending from the coal works at Mamble, to the town of Leominster, a length of nineteen miles. The inhabitants of Leomin fter now purchase coals at 9d. per cwt. who could not procure them formerly under Is. 6d. The bridge over the river Wye, at Whitney, is to be rebuilt on a plan more commodious and elegant than the old one.

OXFORDSHIRE.

The valuable and admired portrait of Sir Thomas White, founder of St. John's College, Oxon, was lately cut to pieces, and wantonly deftroyed, in the common room of that college.

Two thousand copies of the Vulga e Tranflation of the New Teftament have been lately printed, and are now diftributing, gratis, among the French emigrant clergy in Great Britain, at the expence of the Univerfity of Oxford,

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE.

Some labourers lately, digging on the ground of Lord Grenville, at Dropmore, discovered a great number of oaks, immerged about fourteen feet deep in the earth; they were of uncommon magnitude, and for the most part perfectly found. They were laid close together, and nearly in the fame direction. The place where they were found is the highest spot of ground in the county.
