A. And it came to pass, that the ground clave asunder, that was under them: and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

Q. 168. What said God to Noah concerning those that shed man's blood? Genesis, ix. 6.

A. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed for in the image of God made he man.

Q. 169. What did the Lord command the prophet to tell Ahab, king of Israel, when he went to take possession of Naboth's vineyard? 1 Kings, xxi. 19, 23.

A. Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? Thus saith the Lord, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. And of Jezebel, also spake the Lord, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.

Q. 170. What said Isaiah the prophet of those people who would not hearken to the call of God? Isa. Ixv. 2, 3, 12. A. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts; a people that provoketh me to anger continually. Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because, when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

Q. 171. Why were the king of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem carried away captives to Babylon? 2 Chron. xxxvi. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20.

A. Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord his God, and hardened his heart from turning unto the Lord God of Israel. Moreover all the chief of the priests and the people transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the Lord which he had hallowed in Jerusalem..

And the Lord God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling-place: But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, till there was no remedy. Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age; he gave them all into his hand. And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons, until the reign of the kingdom of Persia.

Q. 172. What saith the prophet Amos of those that live at ease in Zion? Amos, vi. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6.

A. Wo to them that are at ease in Zion! Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; that chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Q. 173. What is the reason that blessings are withheld from a nation? Jeremiah, v. 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31.

A. Your sins have withholden good things from you. For among my people are found wicked men: as a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: they judge not the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper: and the right of the needy do they not judge. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: Shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land. The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means, and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Q. 174. Doth the apostle Peter say that the righteous will scarcely be saved? 1 Peter, iv. 17.

A. What shall the end be of them that obey not the

gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Q. 175. What said the prophet Isaiah of those who make unrighteous decrees? Isaiah, x. 1, 2.

A. Wo unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed; to turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

Q. 176. Will God take vengeance on his adversaries ? Nahum, i. 2, 3, 5, 6.

A. The Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies; and will not at all acquit the wicked: The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.

Q. 177. Did God threaten to punish the world for their evil? Isaiah, xiii. 11, 12.

A. I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.

Q. 178. What did the prophet Ezekiel say should befall the Jews for their wickedness? Ezekiel, vii. 8, 9, 15, 17, 19, 25, 26, 27.

A. Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations. And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways, and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee, and ye shall know that I am the Lord that smiteth. He that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him. All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water. Their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord: Destruction

cometh: and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none. Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet: but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients. The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them. Q. 179. Will God render to every man according to his deeds? Romans, ii. 2, 6, 7, 8, 9.

A. We are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth, who will render to every man according to his deeds: to them who, by patient continuance in well doing, seek for glory, and honour, and immortality, eternal life; but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath; tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil.

Q. 180. What befell Jeroboam, when he put forth his hand to lay hold on the man of God? 1 Kings, xiii. 4.

A. And it came to pass when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar, in Bethel, that he put for his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

Q. 181. Why did God declare to Noah that he would destroy the old world? Genesis, vi. 5, 7.—vii. 4.

A. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually: and the Lord said, I will destroy man, whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beasts, and the creeping things, and the fowls of the air: for it repenteth me that I have made them.

And I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights: and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

Q. 182. Was the old world destroyed accordingly? Genesis, vii. 17, 19, 23.

A. And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills that were under the whole heaven were covered.

And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

Q. 183. After what manner did the Lord destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? Genesis, xix, 24, 25.

A. Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven: and he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

Q. 184. What said John the Baptist to the Pharisees andSadducees that came to his baptism? Mat. iii. 7, 8, 9, 10. A. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father. The axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

Q. 185. What did Christ say of those cities that had seen his mighty works and yet would not repent? Matthew, xi. 21, 22.

[ocr errors]

A. Wo unto thee, Chorazin! wo unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment than for you.

Q. 186. What became of the rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen? Luke, xvi. 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.

A. There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which felt from the rich man's table: moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores: and it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom; the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth
