and other Parties interested with him, as of his Majesty of Great Britain, for the Intereft of his Son-in-law, and of the Perfons interested with him in the City of Cologne.

VI. And as well his Majefty of Great Britain, as her Highness the moft Serene Infanta, have agreed, That the faid General Treaty fhall begin at fartheft within the fpace of three or four months, after the date of the prefent Treaty; and for that Effect the forefaid Princes fhall fend their Ambaffadors, Commiffioners or Deputies to the faid Place agreed upon.

The which Articles above-mention'd, the moft Serene King of Great Britain on the one fide, by virtue of the Power he has receiv'd from his Son-in-law; and the most Serene Infanta, by virtue of the forefaid Powers on the other fide, fincerely promife and oblige themfelves, on the Faith and Word of Princes, really and punctually to fulfil, and caufe to fulfil the whole Contents of these Prefents, without doing any thing to the contrary either directly or indirectly: the faid moft Serene Infanta engaging her felf to ratify, and caufe his Imperial Majefty to ratify this prefent Treaty, and to deliver their Ratifications thereof to his Majefty of Great Britain, who reciprocally promifes to ratify, and caufe his Son-in-law to ratify (by fubfcribing his Name) this faid Treaty, and deliver the faid Ratification to the faid moft Serene Infanta, or her Minifters, within the space of two months

JAMES

LAMES, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, &c. To all who fhall fee thefe Prefents, Greeting. Whereas thro the great Defire we have always had to put a stop to War, and to bury the Troubles which are fprung up in the Empire, and to fee the publick Peace and Tranquillity of Christendom reftor'd and fettled, we have for that end fought all occafions of embracing all the means conducing to that Good; and judging that, in order hereunto, it would be expedient firft of all to defift from all Acts of Hoftility by a Ceffation of Arms, in order to prepare the way for a Treaty, which could

not have its free and regular Courfe, amidst the Noife and Commotions of War: We no fooner understood the fame Difpofition and Design of the moft High, most Excellent and moft Potent Prince, Ferdinand II. by the Grace of God, Emperor of the Romans, &c. our most dear and moft beloved good Brother and Coufin, towards the faid Ceffation, but we dispatch'd for that effect our Ambaffador Extraordinary at the Court of the most High and most Potent Princefs, our most dear and most beloved good Sifter and Coufin, the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, by her Intervention, to debate and conclude that Affair of the Ceffation of Arms, with the Commiffioners by her deputed, in virtue of the Power and Authority given to her by his Imperial Majefty. And altho the matter could not then be refolv'd, because of the many great Difficulties that happen'd in the Negotiation, yet this good Defire having continu'd on both fides, and given birth to new Expedients to begin it afrefh, by the Intervention of our faid good Sifter and Coufin, the most Serene Infanta, who fent to us her Ambaffador Extraordinary, the Sieur de Boifchot, Baron of Saventhern, &c. to treat with us and our Deputies for that end, together with Don Carlos de Coloma, Ambaffador Extraordinary from the moft High, moft Excellent, and moft Potent Prince, the King of Spain, we defiring with our Power to advance this Work, in order to be able to obtain a Peace, and being willing to commit the fame to Perfons of fufficient Prudence and Integrity, We make it known, that having full Knowledg of and Confidence in the Probity, Sufficiency, Loyalty and Experience of our dear and well-beloved Coufins, Lionel, Earl of Middlesex, Lord High Treasurer of our Kingdom of England, &c. Lewis, Duke of Lenox, Mafter of our Houfhold; James, Marquifs of Hamilton, Thomas, Earl of Arundel and Surry, Great Marefchal of England, William, Earl of Pembroke, our Chamberlain; and Oliver, Viscount of Grandifon, and our faithful and well-beloved Arthur, Baron Chichester of Belfast, Lord Treafurer of our Kingdom of Ireland, Sir George Calvert, Knight, one of our Principal Secretaries of State; and Sir Richard Wefton, Chancellor of our Exchequer, all Counsellors of our Council of State: We have conftituted and deputed them, and do by thefe Prefents conftitute and de

pute them, to treat, conclude and fettle with the faid Lords the Ambaffadors Extraordinary of the most Serene King and Infanta, our moft dear Brother and Sifter, they being warranted with fufficient Power as to the matter of the faid Ceffation of Arms, the Affair of the Sequeftration of the Town and Forts of Frankendale, in the hands of the faid Lord the King, under fuch Compacts, Conditions and Securities, and for fuch time as can be agreed on, in the fame manner as we our felf could do in our own Perfon; for which we have given, and do give them full Power and Authority, altho the Cafe fhould require a more fpecial Commiffion than is contain'd in thefe Prefents: Promifing on the Word and Faith of a King, and upon the Mortgage of all our Goods prefent and to come, to be fatisfy'd with, and hold firm and ftable for ever, all that fhall be done, treated and concluded by our faid Commiflioners; and to obferve and fulfil the whole in every Point, without ever doing any thing to the contrary, either directly or indirectly. In Teftimony whereof we have fign'd thefe Prefents with our own Hand, and caus'd our Seal to be put and affix'd thereto. Given at Newmarket the ift day of May, in the year of Grace, 1623. and of our Reign in England and Ireland the 20th, and in Scotland the 50th. James the King.

TSABELLA Clara Eugenia, by the Grace of God, Infanta of Spain, Archdutchefs of Auftria, &c. To all who fhall fee thefe Prefents, Greeting. Whereas his Imperial Majefty, by his Letters Patent of the 4th of June, 1622. hath, at the inftant and repeated Request and Interceffion of the moft High, moft Excellent and moft Potent Prince the King of Great Britain, our most dear and moft beloved Brother, out of the great Defire he hath to fee the publick Peace and Tranquillity_eftablifh'd, given full Power, Authority and abfolute Commiffion to fettle and make a Ceffation of Arms in the Palatinate, and other Parts in Germany, with all that depends thereupon, as the faid Lord the King has always teftify'd that he defir'd, having for that effect fome time ago fent his Ambaffador to our Court, to whom we have alfo join'd our Commiffioners and Deputies, to conclude and fettle in our name the faid Sufpenfion or

Ceffation

Ceffation of Arms, yet without this Affair's being brought to a final Determination, altho it was afterwards continu'd and profecuted. And being defirous to fee the good and happy Succefs thereof, and anfwer the Defign of the Power aforefaid; we make it known, that we having certain Knowledg of, and great Confidence in the Prudence and Experience of our moft dear and moft beloved Don Carlos Coloma, Knight of the Order of St. James, Governor and Captain-General of Cambray and Cambrefis, of his Majefty's Supreme Council of War; and Ferdinand de Boifchot, Baron of Saventhen, likewife Knight of the Order of St. James, and Counsellor in his Majefty's Council of State, and Privy Council in the Low Countries: We have delegated, conftituted and deputed them on our part, and do depute, conftitute and delegate them by these Presents, for the effect abovefaid, to treat, conclude and agree with the faid Lord the King, or his Deputies, having fufficient Power and Authority, with relation to the faid Ceffation of Arms, and to fettle the Sequeftration of the faid Town of Frankendale in our hands, under fuch Compacts, Conditions and Conventions, and for fuch time as can be agreed upon on both fides; and that with the fame Firmnefs, and in the fame Form and Manner as we our felf could do, if we were there perfonally prefent (to which we authorize them by thefe faid Prefents) altho the Cafe fhould require a more fpecial Commiffion than is contain'd in thefe Prefents. And we promife on the Faith and Word of a Princefs, and upon our Honour, and under the Obligation of all our Goods prefent and to come, to be fully fatisfy'd with, and hold firm and ftable for ever, all that fhall be fettled, made and agreed for this effect; and that we fhall caufe his faid Imperial Majefty folemnly to confirm, ratify and approve all that fhall be done, treated, concluded and fettled by them in this matter, without ever doing any thing to the contrary, directly or indirectly. We are fatisfy'd with, do approve and ratify by the faid Prefents, and promife to confirm, approve and ratify them in the moft ample Form that can be conceiv'd, for the due Obfervation, Maintenance and Execution of all that fhall be done, concluded and fettled by virtue of that our faid Power. In Faith and Teftimony of all and every one of which things, we the Commiffioners and Deputies aforesaid, have underfign'd the prefent Treaty with our Hands, and ftrengthen'd and confirm'd the fame, by affixing our Seals. At London the 21ft of April, 1623. according to the Stile of England, and the firft of May 1623. according to the New Stile. D. HEREAS the moft High, moft Excellent, and most Potent Prince James, by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and IreLand, &c. has been feveral times humbly requested and befought by the moft High and moft Potent Lords the States General of the United Provinces of the LowCountries, his good Friends and Allies, and not long fince by Francis van Aerffen Knight, Lord of Somelsdiik and la Plate, &c. and Albert Joachimi Knight, Lord of Oftend van Odekenskercke, &c. and Noel van Caron Knight, Lord of Schonewalle, &c. their Ambaffadors Extraordinary and in Ordinary, to continue the Alliance of the Defenfive League begun a long time ago, and continu'd for many Years between his Kingdoms and their Provinces, and to fecure and confirm the fame nore and more, and allow the faid Lords the States to raife fome Troops in his Kingdoms; his fald Majefty, in
