conjecture, but at least it serves to illustrate the form of music used in Indiana during pioneer days. Especial attention is called to the square or buckwheat notes and to the mournful sentiment of the song. Missouri Harmony Class-In 1834 was organized at Morristown, Shelby County, a singing school, called the Missouri Harmony Class. Mary J. Wolfe, the only survivor of the original charter members now living, says that she distinctly recollects that Dr. McGaughey came to the residence of her father, Elijah Tyner, who lived near Morristown, and asked him to assist in the organization of the old Missouri Harmony Class. He subscribed for four scholars, Mary J. Wolf, a daughter; Martha A. Kieth, a daughter; William A. Tyner, a son, and a young man by the name of Jerry Hadley, who was raised by her father. He paid $2.00 for the four. She also recollects that Dr. McGaughey furnished a heating stove for the room where the class met. At the time the class was organized Mrs. Wolfe was ten years of age. Some years ago the following quartette, the last survivors of the original singing class, met and sang a familiar song: Mrs. Mary J. Wolfe, Lucinda Smith, Mrs. Alphius Tyner and Dr. Porter. Thus has passed the Missouri Harmony Class of Hoosier log cabin days. It was succeeded by the Diapason Class, formed by sons and daughters of the members of the older Missouri Harmony Class. BUZZARD'S ROOST By DR. WILLIAM O. STILLMAN, President The American Humane Association William Watson Woollen is one of the first citizens of Indianapolis. Sometime since he presented to that city a bird sanctuary known as "Buzzard's Roost." It is a beautiful, quiet, restful place. Its central idea is that winged creatures, and other small denizens of the wild, should receive sanctuary in this charming park and live protected lives, unmolested and unafraid. It is a place of peace and contentment, and it is a most attractive spot. The Hoosier State may well be proud of its possession. WILLIAM WATSON WOOLLEN Buzzard's Roost serves for purposes of nature study for a very active study club, much interested in the ancient trees and their many citizens of the air. The farmers around this retreat are finding that the protection of the birds has resulted in a special advantage for their crops, on account of the destruction of insect pests. Not so very long ago nearly an entire district in Germany was defoliated by insect pests. Near by was a bird sanctuary. When the insects reached the vicinity of this refuge their ravages were stopped by the birds, to a very large extent. Where the birds have been destroyed, the insects carry on their deadly and blighting existence unchecked. The damage done by insects to crops, in the United States alone, amounts to more than eight hundred million dollars a year. All honor to William Watson Woollen. May he have many followers and imitators. WILLIAM WATSON WOOLLEN, born in Indianapolis, May 28, 1838; graduate of the Law Department of the Northwestern Christian University; admitted to the Indianapolis Bar, April 1, 1861; District Attorney 1862-66, and County Attorney 1882-85; author of "Woollen's Indiana Topical Annotations," "Woollen's Indiana Digest," "Woollen's Trial Procedure," "Woollen's Special Procedure," "Birds of Buzzard's Roost," "The Inside Passage, Tacoma to Kodiak," Contributor to the Indianapolis News, and joint author with W. W. Thornton of "The Law of Intoxicating Liquors." December 9, 1909, he gave to the City of Indianapolis "Woollen's Garden of Birds and Botany," commonly known as "Buzzard's Roost," containing forty-four acres, a reservation for birds and wild. animals, and a place for nature study. Has been an extensive northern traveler.
