PREFACE.

THE Author of this little Manual does not suppose it will supersede any of the similar works which are now in use; though he ventures to hope that it may supply a want which, amid all the variety of forms, has been felt to exist.

He has placed some sentences of Scripture at the beginning of each prayer, one or more to be read by the Master, all standing: and he has also inserted in each prayer a few short and familiar responses to be repeated aloud by the members of the family. The plan is adopted with the view of preparing the minds of the assembled worshippers for the solemn service in which they are about to engage, and of keeping up their attention; points essentially necessary, but rarely attained in Family Prayer.

The Prayers are studiously plain, and are divided each into five parts-Invocation, Confession, Petition, Intercession, Praise and Thanksgiving.

May the Divine blessing attend this humble endeavour to lead some to pray with the spirit, and to pray with the understanding also; that God in all things may be glorified, through Jesus Christ.
