Palacký, the most influential historian of the Czech lands, wrote this short volume as an aid to students of Bohemian history, but it is equally useful to genealogists. The work is a gazetteer of the inhabited places in Bohemia, giving both German and Czech variants of their names. Perhaps the most useful feature of the book is its arrangement, which devotes one chapter to each of the historical kraje (administrative regions) in use up to 1848, after which date the administrative structure of Bohemia was completely reorganized. Within each of these chapters, the lordships or estates in that kraj are listed, stating the specific type of feudal tenure and naming the then-current owner of the estate. Under the heading for each lordship is a list of all of the cities, towns and villages which were part of that lordship, giving for each the number of houses and inhabitants. Places in the list where a church or chapel was located are marked with a cross symbol, and the locations of castles are also marked, using a tower symbol. Alphabetical access to the places listed is provided by an extensive place index at the end of the volume.
